The ends justifies the means: Being a Republican means never having to say you're sorry

Bush Says Election Ratified Iraq Policy: No U.S. Troop Withdrawal Date Is Set

On a complicated matter such as removing a dictator from power and trying to help achieve democracy, sometimes the unexpected will happen, both good and bad. I am realistic about how quickly a society that has been dominated by a tyrant can become a democracy…I am more patient than some.

  • George W. Bush

Well, I suppose when you live in a black-and-white world, it’s easy to feel vindicated. Yes, Virginia, being a Republican really DOES mean never having to say that you’re sorry…and I suppose you can afford to be arrogant when you honestly don’t feel you’ve made any mistakes.

It seems to matter not to 51% of Americans that they have elected a monumentally ignornant man capable of absolutely stunning displays of arrogance and insensitivity. Right; he’s a resolute (read: rigid, inflexible, intellectually vacant)leader, a man of God (read: inflexible, moralistic) who believes he is doing the right thing (no matter how many children of other parents pay the ultimate price cor a failed polciy of aggression).

President Bush said the public’s decision to reelect him was a ratification of his approach toward Iraq and that there was no reason to hold any administration officials accountable for mistakes or misjudgments in prewar planning or managing the violent aftermath.

“We had an accountability moment, and that’s called the 2004 elections,” Bush said in an interview with The Washington Post. “The American people listened to different assessments made about what was taking place in Iraq, and they looked at the two candidates, and chose me.”

Never mind the fact that Bush stood on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln off San Diego in May, 2003 in front of a banner proclaiming “Mission Accomplished”. Never mind that the stunning lack of planning for the war’s aftermath has cost hundreds of American soldiers their lives. Never mind that Bush has consistently refused to accept the accountability that is normally demanded of leaders who do not lead.

Clearly, Bush is a devotee of the theory of the Divine Right of Kings. With the election over, he is free to govern as he chooses and is no longer accountable to anyone. Nice going, y’all.

Congratulations, America. You have given yourself EXACTLY the sort of dim, visionless, uninspired leadership you deserve. Those of you who voted for Bush deserve at least part of the responsibility for those young Americans who continue to return home in body bags. Of course, as long as you have your magnetic yellow ribbons on your minivans, I suppose you’re going to be feeling pretty good about things, eh?

WE DESERVE BETTER. It’s just too bad that the standards of so many of my fellow Americans are set so abysmally low.
