A tribute to the American educational system? I think not.

Can you pass the Third Grade? (Thanks to alert TPRS reader Pat B. for this one…)

As a former History and Social Studies teacher, one of the things that always absolutely flabbergasted me was how little students know (or care) about their own country. Even something as simple as knowing the capitols of the 50 states, or merely being able to name all 50 states is beyond the vast majority. This is something I find difficult to fathom. Are we as a nation that ignorant? Apparently so.

Anyway, here’s a chance for you to see how you measure up. See if you can identify the 48 contiguous states, which is basic Third Grade geography. I scored 48/48…and I want my gold star, dammit!!

Well I'm not American, so I only managed 34/48 :-(

Now try it on our 25 European states (I got 25/25)

Damn! You're good! I think I only got 40 the first time...and I still haven't got those little NE states finished in time. My best so far is 45. But that's gonna change.

I got 50 out of 50, although I was suprised to find out that it doesn't consider the upper penninsula of Michigan to be part of the state of Michigan.

The yoopers (U.P.-ers) would be a bit surprised to find out about that. The one way they don't really count as michiganders is that they tend to support either the Twins or the Brewers rather than the Tigers. In recent years, I guess I can't condemn them for that disloyalty.
