It would be difficult to run short of adjectives to describe Randy Moss- both negative and positive. At once fabulously talented and completely convinced that the world revolves around him, Moss is the prototypical modern professional athlete- complete with the “I know there’s no ‘I’ in team, but you can’t spell team with out ‘me’” attitude.
Fans in Minnesota have had a love/hate relationship with Moss throughout his tenure in Minneapolis. They recognize what an amazingly gifted and unique athlete Moss is. Unfortunately, they are also all too familiar with what a complete jackass Moss can be. Minnesotans value proper deportment. Politeness is a quality that is something that must be…I don’t know, maybe’s it’s the strong Lutheran ethos. Whatever the reasons, athletes who act like jackasses and embarrass Minnesota fans usually don’t last long in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
Randy Moss has been given much more leeway than any athlete could reasonably have expected, both by Minnesota fans and the Vikings organization. Perhaps because of Moss’ undeniable brilliance and game-breaking ability, fans and the Vikings organization frankly ignored things that no other Minnesota athlete would have been allowed to get away with. Perhaps the time has come for him to take his act elsewhere.
The problem with Randy Moss is that the focus is no longer about TEAM, about the Minnesota Vikings and how they can go about achieving the task of winning a Super Bowl championship. Minnesota does not NEED Randy Moss in order to win a Super Bowl. A Randy Moss with a team-first attitude would certainly be a tremendous asset. Randy Moss with his me-first attitude is a cancer, a distraction that detracts from a team effort. Trading Moss to Oakland may well turn out to be a case of addition by subtraction. Perhaps it’s best for everyone- Moss, the fans, and the Vikings organization- that Randy Moss goes to Oakland. It would be nice if Minnesota could actually get fair value. A linebacker and two draft choices?? Gimme a break….
Yeah, I’ve got some mixed feelings about this deal, but I’m not going to lose sleep over Randy Moss. To my way of thinking, you could be the second coming of Lance Alworth, run the 40 in 3.95 seconds, and have hands like SuperGlue-and it wouldn’t make a difference. If you’re a complete jackass and don’t have the respect of your teammates and fans, what does it matter?
Randy Moss is a jackass. Of course, anyone who has been paying attention would hardly be shocked by that revelation. Good riddance. In the end, Minnesota will be a better, and I think ultimately more successful team. If this trade is consummated on March 2nd, which is the earliest it can be done per league rules, Moss will not be forgotten in Minnesota, but I doubt that he will be missed.
