Thank God for California...or is it Sodom & Gomorrah?

Mendocino county mulls organic pot

I do miss living on the Left Coast. Those three Blue States, particularly California, seem to be in the business of providing ammunition to Conservatives who see the West Coast as a veritable den of iniquity. Now Mendocino County, California has expressed a desire to insert itself where no government entity has gone before. They are seriously considering certifying organic marijuana. DUDE….

Mendocino County, the rugged California outpost that was first in the nation to ban genetically modified crops, is striding toward a new agriculture frontier with a proposal to certify medical marijuana as organic.

The notion of pesticide-free pot is eliciting a few chuckles. But county officials, who are waiting to hear back from the state agriculture secretary about their proposal, say the issue is quite serious _ with no system to regulate cultivation, consumers are at risk.

“We regulate wine grape growers and pear growers and everybody else, so why shouldn’t we also regulate pot growers?” said Tony Linegar, assistant agricultural commissioner for Mendocino County. “It’s really an agricultural crop. In our estimate it should be subject to a lot of the same laws and regulations as commercial agriculture.”

If the county got the go-ahead to regulate organic medical marijuana it would be “absolutely a first,” said Allen St. Pierre of the Washington, D.C.-based National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

In an odd way, this makes sense. Given that the growing of marijuana is a largely unregulated business (perhaps because it’s illegal?), consumers have no way of knowing what they’re actually getting- Thai stick or Minnesota ditchweed? Of course, Mendocino County would do nothing to address this issue, but it would seek to certify that medicinal marijuana sold as “organic” is grown according to standards that other crops are held to, specifically that the plants are raised without the use of pesticides. (What, no Paraquat??)

Can you imagine this actually being seriously considered here in Texas? Yeah, right; about the same time that Tom DeLay and Rick Perry comes out of the closet and announce that Perry really IS DeLay’s b—-h….
