The answer to the question: "So why IS North Korea still a Third World country?"

North Korea Declares War On Long Hair

North Korea is perhaps the most repressive regime on the face of the earth. It cannot feed the majority of it’s people, but it does take care of the truly important stuff- like ensuring that the populace is thoroughly and properly indoctrinated. Kim Jong-Il’s personal playground has one of the largest armies in the world, as well as reputation for being every bit as unpredictable and unstable as the Supreme Leader’s moods.

Above anything else, though, they’re certainly going to be well-groomed….

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea is fighting a new war — against long hair.

The dictatorship has been telling its men to trim their hair “socialist style” since last September — saying men with long hair are incompetent and unhygienic.

The North’s state-run news media identifies violators of the edict by showing them on TV, identifying them by name and address and then critiquing their hair. It showed one man with hair over his ears Monday — and asked if he can be expected to “perform his duty well.”

The government mandates that hair be no longer than two inches. But it does offer an exception to old men — who are allowed to grow 2.8 inches to hide balding.

Well, if “performing one’s duty” includes starving to death, it’s difficult to imagine how long hair could impede one’s performance. Of course, in a society where conformity and purity of thought are prized above all else, anything that smacks of individuality is perceived as a threat to the State.

Not exactly the Magic Kingdom, eh?
