Fischer headed to Iceland but not home free

He’s a lonely, crotchety, thoroughly $&^@-ed old man that only serious chess aficionados really care about. Yet the international media are all atwitter now that Bobby Fischer will be living out the remainder of his bitter, pathetic existence in Iceland. If a chess grandmaster falls on a glacier and no one is around to hear it, does he even make a sound? Man, if Fischer has been planning on fleeing into obscurity, he certainly couldn’t have done much better than Iceland.
Of course, in typical Bobby Fischer fashion, he is hardly departing the scene quietly. Never blessed with a sense of moderation, Fischer is convinced that the US is after him because the government is controlled by Jews. He has becoming increasingly anti-Semitic with the passage of time, which defies logic (not to mention decency), given that his mother was Jewish.
The US government wants to prosecute Fischer for playing an exhibition match against Boris Spassky in the former Yugoslavia in 1992. He allegedly walked away with $3.5 million and then bragged about how he had no plan to pay income tax on the money. Combine that with the fact that US law at the time prohibited doing business with Yugoslavia, and you might be able to understand why the government wants their pound of flesh.
Fischer, with a long white beard and wearing jeans and a baseball cap, was characteristically defiant as he left the immigration detention center on Tokyo’s outskirts and headed to the airport.
As he walked toward the airport entrance, he turned, unzipped his pants and acted like he was going to urinate on the wall. He called Japan’s ruling party “gangsters,” and said he was being hounded by the United States because it is “Jew-controlled.”
Yep, Bobby Fischer may have been a brilliant chess player, but he has certainly evolved into a world-class DUMB@$$. If I were the Justice Department, I’d tell Iceland to keep him. After all, how much trouble can Fischer get into in Reykjavik?
