And it couldn't have happened to a nicer demagogue, Chapter 21

Ethics Reversal Signals DeLay Isolation

If fish rots from the head, will DeLay cost any seats?

Daily Bad News For DeLay

The drumbeat continues, and I’m trying to remain optimistic in my belief that in the end it will have the desired effect. Now that at least a few Republicans are beginning to voice concerns about Tom DeLay (Which, given DeLay’s power and vindictiveness, is no small act of courage.), a reasonable person can finally hope that his reign may be coming to an end.

This may well be true, but let’s not indulge in overoptimism just yet. DeLay has proved a resilient sort over the years, and his power base has been built on money, fear, intimidation, and self-interest. This may not prove the strongest of foundations, but it may in the final analysis be just strong enough to keep the wolves at bay.

In thinking about this situation, I can’t help but wonder what would be happening if DeLay were a Democrat (perish the thought….)? The weeping, gnashing of teeth, and the peals of righteous indignation would be heard far and wide. Right-wing bloggers would be organizing lynching parties. Republicans would be falling over themselves in paroxysms of principled anger and dismay that a member of the House could tarnish such a cherished institution with such corruption and self-interest. So why, then, do we hear…well, nothing but frightened silence emanating from Congressional Democrats? Could it really be true that Democrats simply don’t have the cojones to call it as they see it? Come on, people…show some balls, willya??

Perhaps the saddest aspect of this sorry episode is the milquetoast manner in which Democrats have reacted. Were the corrupt Congressman in question to be a Democrat, Republicans would be roasting his testicles slowly over an open flame. Yet Democrats seem content to allow “the process” to take it’s course. What process?? The House Ethics Committee is still a Republican tool for whitewashing Republican ethical lapses, which leaves only the court of public opinion. If Democrats are afraid to speak their minds, that leaves only us Left-wing bloggers. Sorry, y’all, but as much as I believe in my fellow Libruls, if anyone is depending on us to bring down Tom DeLay, you’re going to be horribly disappointed. When last I checked, none of us answer to “Congressman”.

Apparently, it’s true…being a Republican really does mean never having to say you’re sorry. Does anyone else fear for our Republic as I do?
