Give me a Sharpie before the terrorists win

‘Most likely to assassinate President Bush’ caption blacked out of yearbooks

I can understand that threatening the life of a President, however obliquely, has to be taken serious. No reasonable person can or should expect that such things should be taken lightly. Nonetheless, there comes a point where things get just plain silly.

Once the Secret Service was able to establish that a yearbook caption posed no real threat to the life of the President, you’d think that they’d move on to more pressing matters, right? Well, guess what? Apparently ANYTHING that disparages Our Sainted President, however silly or well-intentioned, is considered a legitimate threat, and the Secret Service will spare no effort in order to blot it out- literally.

WIDEFIELD, Colo. - High school yearbooks were recalled so that administrators could black out a joke caption under one student’s picture: “most likely to assassinate President Bush.”

Mesa Ridge High School officials recalled about 100 yearbooks earlier this month and had staffers use markers to obscure the words in them and in the still-undistributed copies. The Secret Service even launched an investigation.

“They kind of ruined our yearbook,” said Christina Tredway, who just graduated from the school just south of Colorado Springs. Most students thought the blacking-out was a bad idea since the caption obviously was a joke, she said….

There were several other joke captions in the book, including “most likely to forget his gown at graduation.” Names of those involved were not released.

OK, so perhaps it was a tasteless, crude attempt at humor that was clearly inappropriate under any circumstances. Still, doesn’t the Secret Service have better things to do with their time than censor high school yearbooks? Or is enforcing ideological integrity now part of their job description?
