Among the more reasonable reasons is the cost of living there. Most families need two incomes just to get by, and must leave their kids in day care for most of their waking hours. A small two bedroom place is a bargain at 700K$. Regardless of sexual orientation, that kind of mortgage payment would buy a whole lot of disposable diapers!
Or perhaps SF are just being responsible and choosing to have fewer kids.
If not some combination of the above ... y'know, it's time we stopped trying to dominate the earth by putting one of our kids on every frelling square cm.
