And it couldn't have happened to a nicer demagogue, Chapter 37

Ethics panel moves closer to starting DeLay investigation: Party leaders make a tentative deal regarding the staffing setup

Wow…I was beginning to think that this whole sordid episode had finally slid off into the sunset. After all, when was the last time you saw a story about the House Ethics Committee (Say THAT three times while keeping a straight face, eh??) allegedly investigating Tom DeLay? Well, apparently the rumors are true. Of course, if Republicans can manage to delay (no pun intended) things long enough, perhaps all of us really will forget all about this sorry mess, eh?

Being that this is an “Ethics” committee we’re talking about, you’d think that both parties would have an interest in ensuring the bipartisan nature of any whitewash investigation of Tom DeLay, right? After all, the last thing anyone connected with the investigation would want is to have their work product questioned on partisan grounds. Well, a reasonable person might think that way, but you’d certainly be underestimating the motives of Republcans, whom you will never hear using the words “political” and “ethics” in the same sentence.

House Ethics Committee Chairman Doc Hastings, R-Wash., bowed to Democrats’ demands that the committee hire a chief of staff who has bipartisan support and does not have partisan connections.

Hastings had sought to install his top aide as staff director, a plan that drew opposition from Democrats who alleged the move would violate rules adopted in 1997 that the committee be overseen by a “professional nonpartisan staff” approved by a majority of the panel.

Yippee!! Let the whitewash investigation begin!!
