Yeah, well...my God can beat up your God

What do you think about the Tsunami that hit Asia on December 26, 2004? Was it God’s wrath? What about the children who were killed?

I may have grown up Lutheran (not exactly the most joyful, open, or expressive of denominations), but I paid attention enough to recognize that God was generally recognized as a loving, forgiving entity, one who recognized that humans are imperfect but capable of improvement and growth. Nowhere in the Scriptures did God come across as a mean, vindictive, hateful son-of-a-bitch whose method of choice for dealing with unbelievers or sinners was to wipe them out wholesale.

Of course, if you’re a member of Rev. Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church, you no doubt believe that love, charity, and tolerance has NOTHING at all to do with REAL Christianity. God is NOT a forgiving sort. He is vindictive, he carries a grudge, and he is not afraid to use his power to wipe out wholesale populations of unbelievers. You do NOT want to piss off this Deity….

You know…if you stop and think about it for a second…this is beginning to sound and awful lot like radical, Fundamentalist Islamofascism, isn’t it? And therein lies the problem….

The tsunami was an adumbration of the wrath of God, a harbinger of things to come: that Great Day of Judgment. Amos 3:6 “Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?” That word translated “evil” there is means distress, misery, injury, calamity. The answer, of course, to the rhetorical question posed in this verse is a resounding “NO!” See also Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;” And you wonder if this is the wrath of God?

The lands affected by this judgment from God arenít just full of idolatry; weíre talking about places (think Thailand) that are hot spots where American businessmen travel for the express purpose of fornicating with young Asian children. It is a thriving industry over there; many of these girls are taken into that business when they are seven years old or younger. “Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience:” Col 3:5-6. And you wonder if this is the wrath of God?

So, a tragedy that killed something like a gazillion people can be laid to God’s vengeance? What, all these folks just happened to catch God on a bad hair day?? What kind of Kool-Aid are these maroons drinking? Man, the denizens of Westboro Baptist Church must truly be a joyless, heartless collection of mean-spirited and soulless beings. For what kind of “human” being could see anything but tragedy in December’s tsunami?

If Osama bin-Laden was a Christian, he would probably look, act, and sound a lot like Fred Phelps. Though WBC hasn’t (yet) recruited suicide bombers to take out abortion clinics, adult bookstores, strip clubs, and the like, it truly isn’t much of a stretch to imagine these Fundamentalist Christian jihadists doing exactly that. Though Eric Rudolph and Paul Hill were not WBC members, their religious philosophies drain down the same gutter as Fred Phelps.

Yes, while most Christian churches preach love, tolerance, and charity on Sunday mornings, the only thing emanating from the pulpit at WBC is hatred, fear, intolerance, and vengeance. Talk about spiritual warfare, eh?

When’s the last time you sat in a pew on a Sunday morning and heard this?:

Not to mention the fact that those Asian countries werenít the only ones affected by the tsunami. Do you realize that among the dead and missing are 20,000 Swedes and over 3,000 Americans? Filthy Swedes went to Thailand - world epicenter of child sex traffic - to rape and sodomize little Thai boys and girls. 20,000 dead Swedes is to Sweden’s population of 9 million as 650,000 would be to America’s 290 million population. We sincerely hope and pray that all 20,000 Swedes are dead, their bodies bloated on the ground or in mass graves or floating at sea feeding sharks and fishes or in the bellies of thousands of crocodiles washed ashore by tsunamis.

Jesus loves me This I know For Bible tells me so….

Or not.

Before you begin thinking that we Americans are getting a from pass from WBC trolls, check this out:

America, who is awash in diseased fag feces & semen, and is an apostate land of the sodomite damned. Let us pray that God will send a massive Tsunami to totally devastate the North American continent with 1000-foot walls of water doing 500 mph — even as islands in southern Asia have recently been laid waste, with but a small remnant surviving. And you wonder if this is the wrath of God?

Gee, and the Chamber of Commerce brochures made the place sound so inviting and peaceful….

Of course, it looks like Rev. Phelps conveniently forgot that since Topeka, KS, home base of Hatred, Inc. Westboro Baptist Church, is located smack in the middle of the North American continent, that 1000-foot walls of water doing 500 mph would also take them out. I can’t imagine that would really be a problem for WBC members, though; they no doubt are expecting to be met at the Pearly Gates by 72 virgins bearing cases of AstroGlide.

It’s difficult for me to reconcile this sort of twisted, Old Testament hatred and vilification being passed off as worshipping the same God I learned about in Sunday School. The truth is that the God of Fred Phelps is nothing like the God the vast majority of Christians worship. Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church as to Christianity what Osama bin-Laden and al-Qaeda are to Islam. Both may profess to serve and worship their God, but in reality it has NOTHING to do with either Islam and Christianity. Ultimately, it’s about power, control, ingorance, and fear…and in each case, a demagogue willing to manipulate ignorance and fear in order to achieve power and control.

No, the Westboro Baptist Church may not yet be the murderous lot the al-Qaeda is, but the rhetoric employed by Phelps is eerily similar to that employed by bin-Laden. The fact the WBC supporters celebrated 9.11 and the Columbia explosions as expressions of God’s wrath should disgust any reasonable person- because Fred Phelps and the WBC trolls are anything but reasonable people.

Q: Why should you never go fishing with only one Baptist?

A: He'll drink all of your beer.

Q: Why don't Baptists have sex while standing?

A: It's too much like dancing.

You can Google "you might be a Baptist if..." and find more humor, but I laughed more at the actual "God hates fags" site...

I think we need more humor that makes fun of radical Islam.

The funny thing is, most of the church members are related to Phelps. There are very few members, and most of them were born or married into that nut's family.

PS- I accidentally stumbled on your site a few weeks ago and check it almost every day. I also live in Seabrook and can't believe there's actually another Dem!

"Nowhere in the Scriptures did God come across as a mean, vindictive, hateful son-of-a-bitch whose method of choice for dealing with unbelievers or sinners was to wipe them out wholesale."

You must have missed Sunday School... a lot. Remember that whole FLOOD deal? What exactly what the point of that again? Oh yea, it was to WIPE OUT HUMANITY WHOLESALE BECAUSE THEY WERE A BUNCH OF ROTTEN, WORTHLESS SINNERS! ...Just to name the one most blatant, glaring example of your ignorance of the Bible...

Sphagnum,
that's Old Testament.

all about eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, life for a life.

Christianity is supposed to be about "if you are sued for your coat give up your cloak," "turn the other cheek," and "what man among you, if his child asks for bread, will give a stone?"

Supposed to be would be the key phrase here.

Sphagnum- It's difficult to imagine even you supporting the hatred purveyed by Fred Phelps. You constantly amaze me....

Don't sugar-coat Jesus, Sarah. Remember, he is ALSO the guy who talked about setting family members against each other, and about the need to sell one's cloak to buy a sword. And we won't even get into the Book of Revelation.

Oh, by the way -- did you know that Fred Phelps is a DEMOCRAT? And this Republican is more than happy to let you folks keep him.

Oh yeah, I forgot... the New and Old Testaments have nothing to do with one another, right?

Here's some verses from the NT that proves the same point

Matthew 10:
34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. 35 For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. 36 And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. 37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
