Another dream dashed

Christopher Walken for President 2008

Christopher Walken for President in 2008?

Actor Christopher Walken says presidental campaign website a hoax

Last week, I wondered aloud if this could be for real. Christopher Walken? Running for President? Well, hell, why not? It’s not like a trained chimp couldn’t do the same job the current smirking murderer in the White House is doing, right?

Sadly, (or not, depending on your point of view), it appears that this is a (GASP!) a hoax, a joke, an urban legend. Whodathunkit? A hoax? On the Internet? Is there no longer ANYTHING sacred??

Of course, 2008 is still a long ways off (three years if my math holds up), but with the current resident of 1600 Pennsylvania being a lame duck (in addition to being a liar and a demagogue), it’s certainly not too early for someone in search of money and publicity to throw their hat into the ring.

While some of us are still hoping that Wesley Clark will run again (and that Democrats will listen this time), I have a feeling that there are still many surprises lurking in the political landscape. Why not Christopher Walken? Hey, if Ronald Reagan can win a Presidential election, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Walken could follow suit. It’s not as if actors running for office is a new phenomenon any more. Besides, why you look at it, what, really, is the difference between acting and politics- other than in acting you get another take if you thoroughly $%&# things up?

This week’s contender for “Site Most Likely to Yield a 404 Error” is www.walken2008.com, which announces, in the words of film news site Empire Online, that “the twinkle-toed terror that is Christopher Walken is all set to run for President in the year 2008.” It is obviously a hoax. Despite a pop-up “press release” claiming that the actor himself announced his candidacy in a “private conference” held at the Waldorf Astoria on August 9, no mention of the event has turned up in the national press. Web chatter (when has it ever been wrong?) attributes the hoax to members of the aptly named General Mayhem message boards.

OK, so perhaps this really is all a hoax. Perhaps Christopher Walken really isn’t running for President. Hell, why should he? Why take a pay cut and open yourself to so much scrutiny from every imaginable direction (and a few you couldn’t POSSIBLY imagine)? Why not stay at home in the Hollywood Hills? Besides, Washington this time of year is an absolutely miserable place to be (like Crawford, TX is a noticeable improvement, eh?).

So, what’s next? Pee Wee Herman? Anne Heche? Jay and Silent Bob? Stay tuned….

Musicians get even more takes than actors.

Hey, THAT'S IT!--let's nominate the most violent, gun-toting, irresponsible, illiterate rap star available! They've all murdered fewer people (and speak more clearly) than Preznit Stupid.

Or better yet, Charlie Daniels.
