So, the Emperor really IS naked?

Bush popularity at all-time low, poll finds

Mama used to tell me that eventually, you’re not going to be able to keep tracks of all your lies, and they’ll catch up with you sooner or later, so you might as well just tell the truth and save yourself all the heartache. It’s a simple lesson that I’ve tried to live by, and generally I think I’ve done fairly well. This only goes to prove what a lousy politician I’d make.

Silly me; I was always raised to believe that the Truth was an absolute. How was I to know that it’s really very relative, a fungible property that can mean so many different things to so many different people- if only it’s spun properly. What truths are we talking about, you ask? Well, how about the Big One: LYING IS A BAD THING. While it may be true that lying is not necessarily a GOOD thing, it can often be in the political world a necessary thing. How else are you going to achieve a desired policy goal despite the existence of no hard evidence to support your position? Well, if you work in the Bush White House, it’s easy- you simply make the intelligence fit the desired policy. Then you sell it to the People with an ominous twist (“We don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.”). You take a minimum of verified or verifiable information and draw a maximum of conclusions. You send Colin Powell to the UN Security Council to make your case for war against Iraq by manufacturing facts on the ground out of whole cloth (Aluminum tubes? Mobile chemical labs?).

Finally, two-plus years and almost 1900 dead young Americans later, it would seem that Our Glorious Leader’s lies and deceptions are beginning to catch up with him. The problem with propaganda is that you can only paper over the truth for so long before it becomes impossible to ignore. We now seem to have arrived at that point (thanks to one lone bereaved mother from Vacaville, CA). George W. Bush’s approval ratings are now at an all-time low, and the only question I can think of is why anyone supports the smirking, lying fool at all?

President Bush’s popularity has sunk to the lowest levels of his presidency, the Gallup poll organization said Friday.

In poll results released Friday afternoon, the president’s approval rating was 40%, the lowest in his presidency by 4 points….

The Gallup organization said the president’s disapproval rating was 56%. That rating, and the 40% approval figure, are the most negative ratings of the Bush administration. Bush’s previous low point in approval was 44% in a poll conducted July 25-28.

When your continued claim on power depends on continuing to propagate a lie, you cannot claim to be surprised when your constituents jump off the bandwagon when it becomes apparent that you haven’t been honest with them.

NOW can we impeach the smirking murderer?
