I find it terribly ironic that during the Lib-Dem conference, the party who bores everyone about their support for proportional representation, two major countries are constipated politically by close election results. New Zealand will probably not know about who is their new PM until October 1st while Germany will probably be tied up in knots for weeks unless they have another election. This is why PR is such a rubbish voting system. At least with first past the post you have a winner, no matter how close it is in the end. You can not run a civilised first string economy with political chaos for weeks or even months. There are some who suggest that the German situation will not be resolved until next year.
In both countries parties of the right (well as close as Germans get to the right-of-centre) are actively talking to centre-left and even left parties to form a coalition. This kind of coalition merely leads to gridlock where nothing gets done and the country remains in stasis. While NZ is not that healthy with moonbat Helen; Germany’s economy is in serious trouble with its lack of reform. It is being blown off the map economically by its eastern neighbours whose growth rate is 7.5%.
If anything can possibly come good out of these messes is that those who are against PR will have two more glaring examples of why PR is not a good idea.
