We survived! We lived through Rita and we’re back home to a house with NO damage. It’s been a long couple of days. There will be plenty of time in the future to point out the utter helplessness of our local government (and believe me, I’ll rant about that in due time) but for now I’m going to crank down the A/C and sit on the couch.
I don’t know too much about Seabrook, but Clear Lake in general seemed to have fared pretty well. Downtown Houston had a lot of missing billboards, but that seemed to be about it. League City has a lot of missing fence planks and a few downed trees, but other than that, it doesn’t seem that much worse for the wear.
More later… Much later.

To my knowledge, the evacuation of 2.3 million people is a feat that has never been attempted before.
At this point, all things considered, I believe our county and local officials performed to the best of their ability. There are some things that no government, regardless of size, resources or power can accomplish. Guaranteeing the personal safety of each and every individual during a disaster is certainly one of them.
Sure, there will be critism and some of it will be deserved. But we all (this includes governmnent and individuals) need to look back on how we prepared for the storm, the decisions we made, and the timing of our actions. Then we should ask ourselves:
I'll be taking a blogging break for the next week or so. I have three cousins in the Lake Charles area that all suffered flooding and some home damage. Thank God, they were not injured, but it's been awhile since I paid them a visit (And there's this generator and window unit in the back of my truck that just might come in handy over there.)
