While doing my normal writing stuff this week I have been watching the Lib-Dem conference coverage compared by that ole’ curmudgeon Andrew Neil. To wit I just got finished watching Charles Kennedy deliver his conference closer.
One thing it has to be said about Charlie and his party…they are not liberal in any sense of the word. In fact I find it rather grating when oiks like Kennedy evoke the memory of 19th Century liberals. These great men would hardly recognise the party these days. Instead of liberal ideals they are pseudo-socialist high tax & spend authoritarians (think American left-wing Democrats). They are pro-Saddam, pro-EU and anti-American/Israel. (There was a discussion about minorities in parliament and funny enough Jews were never mentioned even thought every other grouping was.) There are those who have tried to drag the L-Ds back to their roots and they were soundly condemned by their leader. They were also routed by the conference as a whole on every motion. How the L-Ds can call themselves liberal is beyond me. They are anything but.
British politics are a bit nuts right now. We have a potential Tory leader who is to the left of the Labour Prime Minister. A Labour Party that is right-of-centre (or believed to be so) and a Liberal party that is way out on the left. We live in interesting times.
