Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Tomorrow’s Rove

It’s what Dick would do

It’s important for people to know that although Alex Cornell du Houx is honorably keeping the commitment he made to the Marine Reserves in high school, he is still a major player in the Maine College Democrats and a vocal opponent of Our Leader and the Iraq Phase of the Eternal War to Resubjugate Brown People. He doesn’t deserve to face death in battle for the glory of Our Leader and his Administration of the Indicted. That honor should be reserved for people like you, able-bodied, albeit overweight, College Republicans who place the needs of the party ahead of national interest.

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #310: Dan Schuberth

Well, at least one of my readers saw this one coming, and it was tough to miss. Few groups are more reflexively and hypocritically supportive of the war in Iraq than the College Republicans, and yet few of them are willing to take their support any farther than hiding behind their trust funds while the question the patriotism of those who think differently. Enlist? Isn’t that what we have black and brown people for?

Few College Republicans are more nakedly, shamelessly willing to broadcast their hatred and disdain for those who think differently than Dan Schuberth. It takes a lot of chutzpah to attack a man who is going off to war to serve his country, particularly when you will be safe and warm in your familiar surroundings. Yet that is exactly what Schuberth did, attacking Alex Cornell du Houx, a 21-year-old Bowdoin College senior who is being called up to serve in Iraq with the US Marines. You’d think that Schuberth would be lauding Cornell du Houx’s sacrifice, especially seeing as how it’s something Schuberth has declined to do. So what’s Schuberth’s beef with Cornell du Houx? Well, Cornell du Houx is an active, vocal Democrat on the Bowdoin College campus, which is enough for DUMB@$$ Schuberth to question’s Cornell du Houx’s ideological bona fides. Apparently, it’s not enough for Schuberth that someone is willing to go off to fight in a war- in spite of their opposition to it. No, it would seem that they also have to be ideologically acceptable as well. And if you don’t open and actively support Our Glorious Leader, then you must be supporting the terrorists, eh?

The senior is most well known on the Bowdoin College campus in his role as development director for the College Democrats of America and as co-president of the Maine College Democrats. Under his leadership, the organization in Maine has grown from two chapters to 23.

While Cornell du Houx has actively rallied against many of President Bush’s policies, he feels that his involvement in the Marines is not a conflict of interest.

“Regardless of my opinions regarding the war in Iraq, it is my duty as a U.S. Marine to serve and I am ready and willing to do my job to its fullest extent,” he said.

Others on campus, particularly his political opponents in the Bowdoin College Republicans, feel differently about his service. Daniel Schuberth, a leader of the Bowdoin College Republicans and College Republican national secretary, said, “I applaud Mr. Houx for his service, just as I applaud any other soldier who is brave enough to take up arms in defense of his country. I find it troubling, however, that one of the most vocal opponents of our president, our country and our mission in Iraq has chosen to fight for a cause he claims is wrong. Mr. Houx’s rhetoric against the war on terror places him in agreement with the most radical fringes of the Democratic Party, and I am left to question his logic and motivation.”

Say what? Cornell du Houx stated in no uncertain terms that he recognizes that he has a duty to his country that takes precedence over his own personal opinion. Though he clearly feels that Our Glorious Leader is wrong on many issues, including Iraq, Cornell du Houx has made it clear that he is serving because it’s his duty and he accepts that. So what, exactly, is Schuberth’s problem? Is he worried that Cornell du Houx will give aid and comfort to the enemy? That’s unlikely, because the enemy will be heavily engaged in trying to blow him up.

If Schuberth is so worried about Cornell du Houx’s “logic and motivation”, perhaps he should do the right thing by his country. Enlist and volunteer to go to Iraq, where he can keep an eye on ideological impure security risks like Cornell du Houx.

A government and legal studies major, Cornell du Houx is also involved in a variety of activities at Bowdoin. Aside from his work with the Democrats, he is the co-president of Community Service Council, an active volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and the Young Alumni Leadership Program, and a tutor at local schools in the America Counts Tutor Program. He also works at the youth think tank — Youth Empowerment Program.

Yep, Cornell du Houx sure sounds like a risk to national security,eh? Though not many of us who oppose the war would be willing to send our children to fight George W. Bush’s illegal and immoral war of occupation, Cornell du Houx is clearly a rare breed. Here’s a man who demonstrates that it’s possible to oppose Our Glorious Leader’s immoral war and yet recognize that when duty calls it’s time to go.

Schuberth should be applauding Cornell du Houx for putting aside his own personal beliefs and doing his duty. Cornell du Houx is doing something that Schuberth clearly has no intention of doing- putting himself in harm’s way. Besides, if Schuberth is so gung-ho in his support of Our Glorious Leader’s war, shouldn’t he be the one going to Iraq and dodging IEDs?

Yes, kids, Dan Schuberth is truly a DUMB@$$ extraordinaire. It takes some monster cojones to hide behind your trust fund while questioning the ideological reliability of a Marine, who though a Democrat who opposes the war, recognizes his duty and has no problem with fulfilling it. It’s a hell of a lot more than Schuberth has shown himself willing to do.

Oh, yeah…if you feel like making your feelings known, feel free to drop DUMB@$$ Schuberth a line at dschuber@bowdoin.edu. Perhaps some gentle persuasion will help him to see the error of his ways and entice him to enlist in order to show his support for Our Glorious Leader’s permanent war against brown people.
