Texans eke out season’s sole win in Browns battle
OK, so it wasn’t you’ll ever see replayed on ESPN Classic. In spite of their best efforts to give away the game, the Houston Texans held on to beat the Cleveland Browns 19-16 yesterday at Reliant Stadium.
This was a team that had a realistic shot at going 0-16, and I was actually hoping for it- just so Bob McNair could blow things up and start over again. Hey, the Texans may still win the Matt Leinart sweepstakes, and 1-15 is still a very realistic possibility. It was nice to see David Carr & Co. finally show some life, if only for one afternoon.
On a brighter note, my cell phone rings at about noon yesterday. On the other end is my brother, Michael, who lives in Greenville, NC. Since I haven’t talked to him in a few weeks, I was happy to hear from him.
“Hey, bro’! Guess where I am?”
“Uh, on Death Row?”
“I’m sitting at the top of Bank of America stadium in Charlotte, at a Panthers’ game!”
“Who are they playing?”
“Minnesota!”
Damn…now he’s got my attention. My Vikings are in Charlotte, NC, and one of my brothers is there to take in the experience. There’s just one problem. He’s a Carolina fan. OK, it could be worse; he could be a Packers fan; I’ve got a couple of those lurking in my family as well.
Then again, it’s not as if my Vikings actually showed up, getting blown out 38-13 on an afternoon when Daunte Culpepper went down with an injury, likely taking the rest of Minnesota’s season with him. Ah, well…it’s only a game, right?
