Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Walgreens’ Wayward Wisdom — Supporting Gay Games

If you think about it, Walgreens isn’t the only retailer guilty of this type of thing. Take Wal-Mart for instance. Obviously, the only reason they hold their annual St. Patricks Day promotion is so that they can sell liquor and brass knuckles to the Irish. The same goes for Target and Columbus Day. They don’t really care about the holiday, they only celebrate it so that they can sell more condoms to Italians. Perhaps you should target these stores too.

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #315: Randy Sharp

There are few things in live I find more offensive and difficult to stomach than those knuckle-dragging troglodytes who espouse hatred in the name of “defending the family” or Christianity. Of course, I do understand that there are folks out there that have a tremendous philosophical and moral issue with the concept of homosexuality. This being (nominally, at least) a free country, that attitude is of course their right as an American. What these folks do NOT have is the right to force that attitude of hatred and divisiveness on others who might not think as they do. While “live and let live” might be anathema to those narrow, Right-wing, Evangelical Social Conservatives at the American Family Association (which, of course, supports only the “traditional” nuclear family concept), most Americans just want to be left alone to live life as they see fit. Gays and Lesbians are no different in that respect.

Though ‘tis better to be thought a DUMB@$$ that to sit at a keyboard and remove all doubt, Randy Sharp wants all of us to recognize that fact that the American Family Association wants nothing to do with tolerance- and that he is, in fact, a major league DUMB@$$. Yes, indeed. Clearly, the “nuclear” family (And who was it who coined the term “nuclear family?” Am I the only one who see the delicious irony here??) is the only acceptable definition of “family” in the eyes of the Lord and the American Family Association.

Yes, when businesses support Gays and Lesbians, only Gays and Lesbians will support businesses….

(AgapePress) - Someone at Walgreens deserves a huge bonus for the idea to increase sales by helping drive events that result in the need for the company’s drugs.

Next July, when the 2006 Gay Games take place in Chicago, historical precedent promises that homosexual encounters will take place by the thousands, in bars, public parks, and shopping mall restrooms. The Gay Games Social Committee almost guarantees it by stating on their website: “Chicago’s LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender] scene is fierce no matter what time of year it is, but during that one week in July 2006, we are committed to making sure you have the time of your life.”

This is where Walgreens’ profiteers put their heads together to insure they get their piece of the pie.

No doubt large numbers of gays will become exposed to HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. A glance at online pictures from past Gay Games’ nightlife is a clear indication that the party scene is designed for “hooking up,” with casual and anonymous sex in mind.

Walgreens must be salivating at the prospect of new customers this will create.

And how better to become the official “drug dealer” of the Gay Games, than to donate $100,000 and become the top sponsor for incredible exposure? It’s a brilliant marketing investment!

I imagine the sales pitch in Walgreens’ corporate board room went something like this: “We know people are going to be spreading communicable diseases and a lot of them will eventually become very sick. If we show support for gays now, we stand to reap a ton of business in the not-too-distant future. Let’s call it ‘Walgreens’ HIV/AIDS Awareness’ so they’ll think of us first when they need drugs.”

Why else should Walgreens want to be a “Premium Level” sponsor of the Gay Games? To stay in business, they rely on people getting sick. The Gay Games are sure to supply an unprecedented concentration of candidates for this niche drug market.

Uh…Mr. DUMB@$$ Sharp? Didja ever stop to think that perhaps Walgreen’s sponsorship of the Gay Games might just be a recognition on the part of the company that this is a worthwhile event? That Gays and Lesbians, as part of the American population, have money to spend, just as other “more worthy” folks such as narrow-minded breeders such as yourself might? Could it possibly be that Walgreens is simply trying to reach out to an underrepresented portion of the marketplace? Could it be that this is just simply a business decision, and not some sort of callow attempt to profit off those sick and dying from HIV/AIDS? And could it be that you are the only one in this scenario sick and depraved enough to suggest that a business would deliberately profit of the sick and dying? Are your knuckles bleeding?

I wonder if you even bothered to read your column prior to posting it online? Or are you so blind to the hatred you spread in the name of “family” and Christianity that you see nothing wrong with advocating the marginalization of a class of people who more than anything else just want to be left alone?

It must be tough being one of the Chosen, but I’ve gotta tell you, Mr. DUMB@$$ Sharp, you DO carry the burden well….
