Well, you had to know that this one was coming from a mile away. Gee, what a shock…Our Glorious Leader nominates an ultra-Conservative judge to replace Sandra Day O’Connor. I am shocked…SHOCKED!…that there is politics taking place in our judicial system. The opening Las Vegas line on when Roe v. Wade goes the way of the buffalo is January, 2007. I’m not certain what the over/under is; I’ll have to get back to you on that one.

CNN’s Bob Franken summed it up a few minutes ago about as well as anyone can: The Right loves Alito, and the Left is upset about him. That indeed appears to be the bottom line, and it doesn’t get much simpler than that, though it is somewhat overly simplistic. In the end, no matter where this battle leads, Franken’s simple statement will remain the underlying truth.

There seems only one way to interpret Samuel Alito’s nomination: George W. Bush’s war against women, the poor, and minorities is back, and stronger than ever. Ladies, if you value your right to control your own body, you might as well enjoy it while it lasts, because a collection of largely White Republican Males will be taking it away from you shortly. And you women who voted for Our Glorious Leader last November are going to have only yourselves to blame.

President Bush named Appeals Court Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court on Monday, hoping to usher in a historic new era of judicial conservatism while ending a Republican divide that doomed an earlier nomination.

Minority Democrats signaled a potentially bruising confirmation battle ahead. Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada, the party’s leader, asked whether Alito was “too radical for the American people” and wondered aloud “why those who want to pack the court with judicial activists are so much more enthusiastic about him than” Harriet Miers.

Bush, naming a replacement for Justice Sandra Day O’Connor four days after Miers withdrew her name, said Alito “has a deep understanding of the proper role of judges in our society.”

“He understands that judges are to interpret the laws, not to impose their preferences or priorities on the people,” the president said.

Alito’s politically conservative views were not in dispute. “Of course he’s against abortion,” his 90-year-old mother Rose told reporters at her home in Hamilton, N.J.

Of course he’s going to be a reliable footsoldier for the Right-wing in their assault on Roe v. Wade and other established legal precedent they oppose. If any of y’all harbored ANY lingering doubt about Our Glorious Leader’s desire to remake our world into something that Fundamentalist Christians find more palatable, Samuel Alito should clear that one up for you. Let there be no doubt about the fact that what we are facing is a social and ideological war, in which the Right does everything within their power to remake the world in their image- and this is exactly what will happen unless the Left and Democrats in the Senate can grow some balls.

Mark my words. If Samuel Alito is confirmed, it will be only a matter of time before Roe v. Wade is overturned, and decades of social progress begins to go by the wayside. How long before the right to privacy is eviscerated, and Big Business is given free reign to trample the rights of workers and consumers? What you will hear in time is the metaphorical grinding sound produced by decades of social and legal progress being rolled back. The assault on our legal rights will be led by a Right-wing whose primary concern is making our world a better, safer place for White, Evangelical Christians who think that Our Glorious Leader is a hero. Yes, it’s true; unless the Silent Majority stands up and says “ENOUGH!”, we will be ruled by the lowest common denominator.

Think it couldn’t happen? Just sit back and watch…and don’t say I didn’t warn you.
