Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Congress to look into ‘deeply flawed’ BCS system

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #329: Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX)

Yes, it would seem that Republicans in Congress have solved all of our nation’s pressing problems. Poverty has been eradicated, they’ve found a cure for HIV/AIDS, Social Security has been fixed, and victory is assured in Iraq-without further loss of American lives. So what’s a bored Congressman from Texas to do? Well, if you’re a DUMB@$$, and if you’re Joe Barton, you’re going to take on the scourge that is the NCAA’s Bowl Championship Series. Yeah, I know…how about y’all just repeat after me:

WTF???

Has Barton and his fellow Republicans truly solved all other problems facing our great nation? Have they nothing left to do but poke their nose into the inner workings of college football? Perhaps next Barton will be leading the charge to determine who shot J.R.? Jeez, what a DUMB@$$….

HOUSTON — Calling the Bowl Championship Series “deeply flawed,” the chairman of a congressional committee has called a hearing on the controversial system used to determine college football’s national champion.

Uh, no…the war in Iraq is “deeply flawed”. That Tom DeLay isn’t behind bars is “deeply flawed”. The BCS? On the scale of pressing problems, the BCS wouldn’t even make the needle jump. Anyone who seriously thinks that the BCS is a problem on par with war and corruption is desperately in need of a reality check.

A House Energy and Commerce subcommittee, charged with regulating America’s sports industry, announced Friday it will conduct a hearing on the BCS next week, after this season’s bowl matchups are determined.

“College football is not just an exhilarating sport, but a billion-dollar business that Congress cannot ignore,” said committee Chairman Joe Barton, a Texas Republican. Barton’s panel is separate from the House Government Reform panel that tackled steroids in baseball.

The committee announcement called the hearing, scheduled for next Wednesday, a “comprehensive review” of the BCS and postseason college football.

“Too often college football ends in sniping and controversy, rather than winners and losers,” Barton said. “The current system of determining who’s No. 1 appears deeply flawed.”

Of course, the bottom line here is: WHO REALLY CARES? This is, after all, a game we’re talking about here. Yes, NCAA Division I football is a multibillion dollar business. Yes, it’s fraught with problems. But do these problems rise to the level of requiring the involvement of Congress?

Barton said he does not have legislation in mind to force a change, but said he hopes congressional hearings will spur discussion and improvements.

Well, sure. That really worked with Medicare and Social Security reform, eh? Congress will get involved, and before you know it we’ll have a BCS system that actually works. This is our tax dollars at work? American troops are still dying for no reason in Iraq, hurricane survivors along the Gulf Coast are still waiting for assistance from FEMA…and Joe DUMB@$$ Barton is worried about the BCS??

Yes, indeed…your tax dollars hard at work…or not.
