Creating an issue where none need exist

Don’t mention the C-word: The word ‘Christmas’ is conspicuous by its absence in NYC

I don’t know about all y’all, but I’ve grown quite tired of the “War on Christmas” canard that Conservates like John Gibson and Bill O’Reilly have created out of whole cloth. Gibson needs to promote his book, and O’Reilly his television show, so what better way than to sow division where none previously existed? Why not create a controversy out of whole cloth?

I’m not at all certain why this Christmas is being regarded as materially different from any other that has come before. This Christmas is every bit as crass, commercial, overhyped, and yet special and meaningful as any other. Like any other aspect of life, Christmas is what you choose to make of it. For some, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and working to make our world a better, more livable, and more peaceful place. For others, it’s about celebrating friends and family, trying to reconnect after devoting so much time and energy to busy lives and careers. For some, it’s about the stuff. Hey, it’s all good. Why can’t Christmas be all of these things? Why do some feel that there is only one acceptable reason and means of celebrating Christmas?

Above all else, the period between Thanksgiving is a HOLIDAY season. Some celebrate Christmas, some Hannukah, some Kwanzaa, some Target & Toys R Us, some the Bowl Championship Series. Each has it’s validity and it’s raison d’etre. How about we all just relax and allow everyone the ability to celebrate whatever it is they celebrate this time of year in whatever manner they choose to celebrate it? It may not be the way you find appropriate, but their celebration isn’t your, is it?

Merry Christmas, y’all…and how about we all just relax and keep our powder dry?
