Freedom of speech? Not exactly....

Channel 13 pulls TV ad linking DeLay, lobbyist

“The ad is reckless, malicious, and false, casting Mr. DeLay in a false light by accusing him of unsubstantiated criminal conduct,” DeLay campaign lawyer Don McGahn wrote Tuesday. ” … We demand that you refuse or otherwise cease airing the advertisement, so as to avoid any liability.”

Damn; those insidious, shameless Libruls have been at it again, attempting to shame and embarrass a man of God and a good and decent public servant (he says as he struggles to keep from spewing Shredded Wheat all over the screen on his laptop….). What in the HELL is this country coming to, when any Left Wing Nutjob with an axe to grind, a camera, and some editing equipment can spew unexpurgated filth about our public servants over the airwaves? Why, there oughta be a law….

Of course, here in Houston, there is little doubt that Tom DeLay, though seriously damaged goods, still carries a lot of political weight. And there are enough of his supporters in decision-making positions at local media outlets to ensure that what Tom DeLay wants, Tom DeLay gets. What DeLay definitely does NOT want is freedom of speech. Break out the lawyers, and before you know it, the legitimate expression of an opposing viewpoint goes by the wayside. What is DeLay afraid of? Merely the truth….

WASHINGTON - A day before a television ad linking Rep. Tom DeLay to disgraced former lobbyist Jack Abramoff was set to hit the airwaves in the Houston area, lawyers for his campaign told local stations Tuesday that the ad contained falsehoods and hinted that it could lead to court action.

At least one station, KTRK (Channel 13), quickly decided against broadcasting the commercial….

The 30-second ad from two liberal-leaning interest groups, the Campaign for America’s Future and the Public Campaign Action Fund, lists money and travel that DeLay allegedly received from Abramoff. It also calls on the Sugar Land Republican to resign from Congress.

McGahn faxed a letter to Houston broadcast stations and cable channels from which the groups bought air time.

Channel 13 management said it “has reviewed this ad according to our usual procedure. We have decided not to accept the ad in its current form.”

In response, David Donnelly, national campaigns director for the Public Campaign Action Fund, said, “Tom DeLay doesn’t want people back home to know what he does in Washington.”

Of course, DeLay has never been renowned for having a thick skin or a forgiving nature…and he certainly doesn’t appreciate opposition groups being given air time- especially when he can’t refute their arguments. Yessirree…when Tom DeLay says “Jump”, local media outlets still bend over and grab their ankles. So much for the Liberal Media….
