Another DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener

Some Gay Couples Adopt to Molest, State Rep Says (thanks, Adam!)

Rep. Debra Maggart, R-Hendersonville, said she still believes homosexual couples should not be allowed to adopt children. In fact, in addition to e-mail correspondence with a master’s student at Vanderbilt publicized recently, in which she said as much, she has also said homosexual couples may molest the children they adopt.

DUMB@$$ AWARD wiener #370: TN State Rep. Debra Maggart

There are few things more repulsive than a politician so convinced of their own correctness that they feel thy have the perfect right to assert whatever springs into their pointy li’l head to buttress their bigotry. Combine this stunning arrogance and insensitivity with the narrow agenda of your average Social Conservative, and you have yourself a DUMB@$$ - in this case Rep. Debra Maggart.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that Rep. Maggart has many admirable (albeit well-camouflaged) qualities. Unfortunately, it would seem that humanity, common sense, and a grip on reality are not among those qualities. Maggart seems to find it acceptable to spew whatever hate-filled ignorance happens to come to mind if it will further her empty, unsupportable argument and her ignorant, hate-filled agenda.

“We also have seen evidence that homosexual couples prey on young males and have, in some instances, adopted them in order to have unfretted access to subject them to a life of molestation and sexual abuse,” she said….

“I have strong convictions. I just feel kids in our foster have been through enough. They need the optimum family unit, and that is a mother and a father,” she said.

In the e-mail with the Vanderbilt student, Maggart said research shows most homosexual couples have numerous emotional dysfunctions and psychological issues that may not be healthy for children.

Yes, and it could be argued that many Evangelical Social Conservatives have what could be described as a border personality disorder. Intolerance, ignorance, and bigotry certainly can’t be healthy for children.

And here’s another point: molesting children is hardly the province of homosexuals. In fact, most children who are abused are abused by heterosexuals. It’s just easier to demonize homosexuals because you can play the “God is on our side” card, eh?

I don’t pretend to be an expert on child-rearing. What I do understand, however, is that hatred is not a family value. Hatred, ignorance, and bigotry are not qualities we should want to be furthered, or even advocated, by our elected representatives. Marginalizing a segment of the population based on half-truths, mistaken assumptions, fear, and outright lunacy is a hell of a way to run a state government. It IS, however, a helluva way to get yourself a DUMB@$$ AWARD, eh?
