Insert "Hot Beef Injection" joke here

Teen dreamed of being Miss Texas Angus (via Vince Leibowitz at Capitol Annex)

Being the Miss Texas Angus Queen is not about wearing a crown and looking pretty, it’s about the hard work, dedication, and knowledge of the breed that proceeds the crowning. Just ask Jennifer Ann Smith. Smith is a sophomore at Waskom High School. The 17-year-old was recently crowned Miss Texas Angus at the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show in Fort Worth.

Jeez, when you’re 16 and you’ve achieved your life-long dream of becoming Miss Texas Angus, where do you go from there? What else is there for you to do? Parlay your fame into into a career in farm animal porn? Become a cashier at Dairy Queen?

Of course, if you’re unfortunate enough grow up in Waskom, TX, you have to think that the unspoken goal for most kids is simple: escape. Otherwise, what’s your other option? Marry someone named Earl? Become fodder for a Dixie Chicks song?

For Jennifer Ann Smith, though, her dream of escaping Waskom began at an early age. If only she could just become Miss Texas Angus, surely the world would open up before her and she could escape her dusty little corner of West Texas wasteland prairie.

“I feel very honored to be selected as Miss Texas Angus,” said Smith. “It has been a dream of mine since I was a young girl.” And as a young girl, Smith began working on a long resume that would one day qualify her for her current title.

Aim high, girl. Aim high. Either that, or marry a doctor or lawyer.

And [Meridee] Wells [Texas Angus Auxiliary Queen Chairperson] thinks Smith can accomplish it all. “She’s certainly going to excel in anything she sets her mind to because she’s very driven,” said Wells. “I think she’s a capable young lady who will represent our breed well.”

We should all be so fortunate….
