So how long before someone has a gripe about this nickname?

Goodbye 1836, hello Dynamo: ‘Energetic’ name completes makeover for city’s MLS team

For a moment Monday morning, Houston’s Major League Soccer team was again nameless, just as it had been for more than a month after relocating from San Jose, Calif., in mid December…. The team officially gave its 1836 name the boot and announced it will build its brand around Dynamo during an unveiling ceremony at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Well, it appears that Houston’s new Major League Soccer team has a new name. Since Houston 1836 proved to be politically incorrect to certain segments of the local Hispanic community, and since the local Hispanic community promises to be a large segment of the team’s fan base…well, you certainly don’t want to piss off the fans, do you?

Personally, I thought, and still think that the whole flap over the “Houston 1836” name was silly in the extreme. Of course, I’m not Hispanic, so I don’t imagine it would be possible for me to fully understand their point of view. I suppose that if you’re inclined to assume the worst and see the negative, you will. Now, the team has a new name, but I can’t help but wondering how long it will be before the electrical engineers complain about how the name insults and demeans their contribution to society?
