The next knock you hear will be from Fox Security

Should campaign-finance laws apply to blogs? Congress votes this week on a bill that would exempt blogs from regulation. Critics see a soft-money loophole.

Look, just because I run a heavily-partisan, frothing-at-the-mouth, Left-wing weblog doesn’t mean I’m not fair and balanced. Well, OK…actually, it does, but that’s never stopped me from running off at the keyboard…and besides, if being a whackjob is good enough for Bill O’Reilly, it’s sure as Hell good enough for me.

Of course, if that was all there was to this, there would be no reason for this screed. From where I sit, though, I’m not planning on losing too much sleep over this. For one thing, there’s the whole “free speech” thing, and because of that I have a difficult time believing that, even if this does become law- which seems a highly unlikely prospect- it will never pass constitutional muster. Surely, even Republicans know enough of the Constitution to understand the import and meaning of “freedom of speech and expression”? Or is that giving them too much credit?

WASHINGTON - If you’re one of the nation’s 30 million-plus bloggers - or among the 75,000 joining their ranks every day - keep an eye on Thursday’s House vote on the Online Freedom of Speech Act. Unless the bill passes, you may need a lawyer, if you discuss politics online. If it passes, you may still need a lawyer, if you spend more than $250 a year on your blog.

Hmm…my host charges me $19.95 per month…times 12 months…hmm…carry the two…and that makes $239.40 per year, so it looks as if I’ll slide in just under the wire. Well, I will unless you count all the money I pay Sean-Paul Kelley to be nice to me. That would put me will over the top….

What I’m really wondering about is why this is the first I’ve heard of this. Have I really had my anterior up my posterior for that long? Apparently so….

I don’t mean to seem so cavalier about this issue, but Sean-Paul asks the question that prevents me from losing sleep:

But seriously, how are you going to regulate a thirty million plus blogs?

Indeed. This from a government that can’t win a war in Iraq or rebuild New Orleans…and now they want to regulate/monitor/tax 30,000,000+ blogs? Yeah, right….

Oh, and by the way…if 30 million people are writing blogs and 75,000 are joining the ranks every day, who’s reading the silly things, anyway???
