Toppling a despot begins with a single voice

Vermont town calls on Congress to impeach Bush

NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) - In a white-clapboard town hall, circa 1832, voters gathered Tuesday to conduct their community’s business and to call for the impeachment of President Bush…. The article, approved 121-29 in balloting by paper, calls on Vermont’s lone member of the House, independent Rep. Bernie Sanders, to file articles of impeachment against the president, alleging that Bush misled the nation into the Iraq war and engaged in illegal domestic spying.

I just LOVE democracy in action…don’t you? Of course, no one is really going to care that the town meeting in East Bumfuck, VT, voted to impeach Our Glorious Leader. Nothing is going to change. Even so, this vote, insignificant as it may seem, represents a chink in the armor of the Republican perception of infallibilty.

The cynic in me thinks it’s just too bad that this sort of civic activism didn’t exist two years ago when Our Glorious Leader was trying to legitimize his theft of the Presidency. Perhaps if it had been, a lot of young American soldiers might have been able to go home to thieir families in something other than a box.

Barring a revolt of the populace descending upon Congress armed with torches and pitchforks, George W. Bush will be impeached about the same time I discover a cure for the common Packers fan. It’s a nice thought, and a man deserves to dream, after all, but if Republicans haven’t yet figured out what Our Glorious Leader has gotten us into, once cannot reasonably assume that this is going to change. Clearly, if I were to ask you which is the most serious lie- about a blowjob or about an immoral war of occupation that has killed 2300 American soldiers…well, let’s say that your answer just might be somewhat different that that provided by Congressional Republicans.

Republicans may well feel justified in laughing off the results of the Newfane, VT town meeting. I’d like to say that they do so at their own peril, but the reality is somewhat different. Still, one small town in Vermont offers at least a glimmer of hope that things might change for the better…and right now, I’m willing to hang onto that tiny glimmer with everything I have. After all, revolutions have started with far less.

Still glad you voted for George W. Bush??
