Can't we just steal more oil?

Bush promotes fuel cells on Earth Day

ST. HELENA, Calif. - Unable to drive down high oil prices, President Bush is spending Earth Day promoting futuristic hydrogen fuel technology as a way to wean Americans from gas-guzzling vehicles. After a bike ride near his Napa Valley resort this morning, Bush planned to visit the California Fuel Cell Partnership in West Sacramento for a tour and speech on his energy plan.

It’s a little late in the game for Our Glorious Leader to be going Al Gore on us, don’t you think? After five years of doing everything he can to destroy the environment, George W. Bush is acting as if he actually recognizes the significance of Earth Day.

You see, it takes more than acting as if you’re a big fan of alternative fuel techonologies and hopping on your mountain bike to convince the American sheeple that you’re an environmentalist. It takes commitment and money, and concrete plans to begin to alter America’s dependence on oil. There are technologies out there that could potential put a serious dent in our oil dependence, but they are still years from true viability, and Our Glorious Leader has already wasted five years by fostering our addiction to oil. Now that his legacy, and the Republican Party’s future, is seriously threated by high gasoline prices, Our Glorious Leader has suddenly recognized that being thoroughly and irretrievably dependent on oil is not such a good thing?

Of course, being a former oil baron, and recognizing that his “election” and re-election was funded in large part by Big Oil, George W. Bush is now having to act horribly out of character. His friends in the oil industry cannot be happy, but neither are his Republican handlers, who know that they may well get hosed in November if something doesn’t change- and quickly. The Republican Party hierarchy understand that Americans will vote their pocketbooks in November, and they know who is going to get blamed for the price of gasoline.

Perhaps if Our Glorious Leader and his handlers had recognized the importance of showing leadership on this issue four or five years ago, they might not be in the mess they find themselves in. No, the price of gas might not have been impacted, but at least there would be programs and initiatives in place to support research on alternative fuel technologies, many of which are years away for economic and practical feasability. Instead, they have done the bidding of their Big Oil masters, with the result that we are five more years behind the curve.

NOW Our Glorious Leader is claiming to wear the mantle of environmentalism? Gimme a break, willya?

The White House hopes the high gas prices will pressure Congress to act on the energy proposals the president outlined in his State of the Union address, such as increased federal research into alternative fuels and batteries for hybrid and electric cars….

The promise of hydrogen fuel cell technology in vehicles is a favorite of automakers, environmentalists and politicians because it accomplishes two important goals — automobiles that run on fuel cells would not require gasoline and emit only water.

The problem with the technology is that it’s many years away from widespread use. And it would require a new system of distributing hydrogen fuel to replace today’s network of gasoline pumping stations.

Bush used his weekly radio address Saturday to promote the idea. “These fuel cells have the potential to revolutionize the way we power our cars by giving us vehicles that will emit no pollution and will be more efficient than gas-powered cars,” he said.

I suppose we should be grateful that Our Glorious Leader has seen the light of alternative fuel technology. Of course, let’s be honest and realistic. It’s only with the price of gas seriously imperiling Republican prospects in this fall’s mid-term elections that has caused Our Glorious Leader even slighly off his “we can drill our way out of this problem” stance. George W. Bush is no environmentalist, no matter how he and his handlers spin the truth of $3/gallon gasoline.

If George W. Bush is an environmentalist, then I’m the Queen of England…and I don’t think any of y’all want to see me in a tiara.

Too little, too late, too cravenly political.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
