Some thoughts on the political passing of a Republican thug

Its unfortunate that Delay is bowing to the orchestrated political pressure by the Democrats and the liberal media, but he has the right idea, it’s better for his district, the State, the Country, and even the Republicans to do so. Even Nixon had enough integrity to know when to leave. Ol Slick Willy Clinton on the other hand is a different story.

Now that Tom DeLay has finally awakened and smelled the cat litter, it’s time to applaud him for (finally) doing the right thing. Of course, that’s about as much as DeLay is getting from me in the way of kudos, but let’s give credit where credit is due. The man did the smart thing…and in his own cunning, calculating way, he may just have set the table for Republicans who want to keep the CD-22 seat on their side of the ledger.

I still don’t know exactly what’s going to happen, because we still don’t know the particulars of when DeLay will be riding into the sunset. Yes, Democrats will smell blood in the water, but you can bet that whomever the Republicans put forward will have some heavy hitters behind them. Nick Lampson will have a huge end in fundraising, but CD-22 is still 60% Republican, and if these folks can stand behind a corrupt Tom DeLay for years, you’d best not be deluding yourself into thinking they’ll suddenly vote Democratic. Lampson has a chance, certainly better today when the sun rose Monday morning, but he still faces a decidedly uphill battle.

Part of me wonders if I’m the only one who’s wondering if perhaps this wasn’t just a little bit too easy. After all, people like me have been militating for DeLay’s defeat and demise for some time now. After all, I was the originator of the “And it couldn’t have happened to a nicer demagogue” series…and I’ve been beating this drum for awhile now. Now that the dream has been achieved, it’s difficult not to wait for the other shoe to drop. If it feels too good to be true…is it?

It’s not surprising that, even as DeLay’s political career is circling the drain, he blames Democrats and the “Liberal media”. Whether his attitude is produced by arrogance or hubris, the end result is still the same. That’s all that really matters to me at this point. Whatever self-serving bleating DeLay manages to serve up, he’s still out of the CD-22 race and, before long, out of Congress. If he wants to move to the Mount of Olives and nail himself to a cross, I could care less. My concern now is about where we go from here.

Until we figure out what happens next, we’re doubtless going to be subjected to DeLay’s apologists, who will stop at nothing to lionize a man whose pious, mean-spirited corruption represents everything that is wrong with politics (and Christianity) today.

WASHINGTON, April 4 /U.S. Newswire/ — In response to news reports that Rep. Tom DeLay is planning to end his race for reelection and resign from Congress, Vision America President Dr. Rick Scarborough called the former House Majority Whip “a man of courage and commitment, and a friend of over 20 years.”

“More than anyone in Washington, Tom DeLay fought our battles — to end the horror of abortion, preserve the sanctity of marriage, rein-in a runaway judiciary and keep America one nation under God. We would be ingrates indeed if we did not take this occasion to express our appreciation for the contributions of this great man,” Scarborough declared.

Yeah, there’s so much to be grateful for…demagoguery, corruption, the use of dogmatic religious intolerance to justify using any means necessary to secure and maintain power…I could keep going, but even this short list makes me feel…well, something short of grateful, certainly.

Predictably, Scarborough is about to embark on a trite little discourse concerning the alleged and mythical “War on Christianity”. Hey, if it makes you feel better about your narrow-minded, fear-based ideology, knock yourself out….

Vision America held a widely publicized War on Christians conference in Washington, D.C. last week. Rep. DeLay was a keynote speaker, along with Sen. John Cornyn, Alan Keyes, Phyllis Schlafly, Gary Bauer, Rabbi Aryeh Spero, Janet Parshall and evangelist Rod Parsley. The conference was covered by ABC World News Tonight, The Washington Post, USA Today, Time magazine and The Washington Times, among other media.

In an article in the online edition of Time, Rep. Delay credits the War on Christians Conference with helping him to make a decision about his future.

“I’m proud of Tom’s participation in our landmark conference,” Scarborough said. “And I would remind the media that in America, a man — even a terrorist suspect — is innocent until proven guilty. Of course, in the eyes of some, that’s not the case if the accused is a conservative Christian.”

Oh, right, I keep forgetting…Conservative Christians are big fans of playing the martyr card, aren’t they?

The author of “Liberalism Kills Kids,” Scarborough added: “Heroes come and go. The cause of returning America to its Judeo-Christian roots continues.”

And what else could you expect from someone who calls himself a “man of God” and yet can still see his way clear to peddle this trash. “Liberalism Kills Kids”? What an arrogant, self-righterus jackass. If DeLay and Scraborough are Christians, I’m the Queen of England - and I don’t look good in purple.

DeLay is not the first self-righteous religious bigot to claim Divine Providence when it comes to defending his corrupt, self-interested venality, and he won’t be the last. He just happens to be the Congressman from my district, and he just announced that he’s no longer running for re-election. And, yes, I could hardly be happier. If that makes me a soldier in the “War Against Christianity” in the eyes of some, so be it. From where I sit, it’s about decent, honest, principled representation, not ideological warfare cloaked in pious rhetoric and demagoguery.

Right now, there are a whole lot more questions than answers. The next few days and weeks will begin to fill in some of the blanks, but for now I think I’ll just sit back and bask in the warm glow of victory. One of the most corrupt, mean-spirited, and divisive politicians of our era has given up and will be riding off into the sunset. Talk about the triumph of Good over Evil. Yes, life is good…for now, at least.
