Rep. Charles “Charlie” Gonzales…is a Democrat. Sometimes. But not today. Today he was Ed Whitacre’s, CEO of AT&T, tool in Congress. You see, Charlie voted against the Markey Amendment, which would have guaranteed internet freedom. The Markey Amendment would have prevented AT&T (who has given Charlie almost $60,000 in campaign donations) from creating a “Tony Soprano model of networking, where some companies get better service than others,” as Professor Tim Wu, a staunch proponent of internet freedom, said in his recent testimony before the committee. Charlie voted against the amendment because he is opposed “regulating the internet.”
Regulating the internet?
Guess what he did later in the afternoon? He offered a telecom cartel sponsored amendment to regulate search engines! But hey, that’s not regulating the internet, right?
