Can anyone reasonably claim to be surprised here?

Intolerant Canada

PM’s office issues keep quiet order: Harper tells Tory MPs to stay mum on Mounties’ wedding

Memo to Canadians:

Congratulations! And welcome to the club…the “He-Man-We-Hate-Anything-And-Anyone-Different” Club. We’ve been trying to get you to join for years now.

I’m not going to defend homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle, because frankly there’s nothing to defend. I have chosen not to partake in the “gay lifestyle” (whatever that means), but if free, thinking individuals choose to do so, then who am I to deny them that freedom? And who are you to do so? Welcome to the wonderful world of Stephen Harper, Canada’s new Prime Minister, who rode into office promising that things were going to be different once he was in charge. F’rinstance, Canada’s international image as a bastion of freedom and tolerance? C’mon; that was SO Nineties. In the brave new world of Canadian politics, it would seem that Stephen Harper is the northern version of Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader. Why lead when you can divide?

I suppose it was just a matter of time before ignorant, fear-based politics migrant north to Canada. After all, they import our products, television shows, and music, so it would stand to reason that they would eventually be importing our ideology as well.

You folks who helped elect this new Prime Minister, you’re getting the same lesson in democracy that we got here in the states. You have no one to blame but yourselves for the government you chose to put in power. These conservative governments tell you what they’re going to do, then you act surprised when they do it. They tell you quite clearly that they do not believe in tolerance, they do not believe in an open and free and liberal society. Then when they get elected and slowly destroy your freedoms, who you are as a country, you act surprised. Or worse, you don’t act at all. Canada’s once pristine image as the much kinder and gentler America is quickly being destroyed by your own Prime Minister.

Yeah, “live and let live” DOES get old after awhile, eh?

OTTAWA — The Harper government has forbidden its MPs from discussing the first same-sex Mountie marriage, referring all questions on the subject to Stockwell Day.

But Mr. Day, public safety minister and a vocal opponent of same-sex marriage, wouldn’t speak about the upcoming nuptials of two Nova Scotia Mounties, Const. Jason Tree and Const. David Connors.

“The minister won’t have any specific comments on this,” Melissa Leclerc, Mr. Day’s communications director, said Wednesday. “That’s their private life. There’s nothing much we can say.”

It has been reported that the prime minister’s office has designated Mr. Day to respond to any questions about the marriage of the two men, a signal intended to keep other MPs from discussing the potentially controversial subject in the media.

Yes, gay marriage is legal in Canada, though one would really have to wonder for how much longer that’s going to be true. It looks as if the new government is endeavoring to put the gay marriage law up for another vote in Parliament, though no one seriously seems to think that the new Conservative government will succeed in rolling back the law…not that this inconvenient reality will stop narrrow-minded hate-filled bigots from working to remake Canada in their image.

Gay marriage is a serious issue for the new government in Ottawa, though at this point it really should be considered settled law. Rights are not something that should be encoded into statue law and then taken away when a new, more Conservative government comes to power. Stephen Harper came to power promising a different way of thinking, a more Biblically-oriented, Conservative way of thinking. No reasonable person should be surprised that Harper’s government is simply trying to follow through on it’s campaign promise.

I’m not going to lecture on the intricacies of Canadian politics. If that’s what you’re looking for, you can visit my friend (and the de facto TPRS IT department) James Bow. Like many Americans, my knowledge of Canadian politics is minimal and superficial. James, being a thoughtful Canadian, will give you the whys and wherefores. Me? I can tell you that Edmonton’s running out of beer, which is no doubt a crisis for all concerned, but as far as Canadian politics go, I’d rather not stick my foot in my mouth, except to congratulate the Canadian people for getting exactly what they voted for. Here in this country, we’d call you Republicans…and it appears you’d fit right in.

How’s that hatred and intolerance working out for you so far??
