Not as shiny, but more valuable

Don’t buy your mom diamonds or gold for Mother’s Day. Sure, if you do, she’ll have another bauble in her jewelry box, but you’ll be making the jeweler more happy than her. His coffers will be enriched, and he’ll be able to contribute more to politicians that you don’t want in office.

Instead, give Mom a coupon for a mammogram or cardiogram, or give blood and name her as a beneficiary. It’s not showing bad taste, it’s showing her that you want her to stick around for awhile. What better way to tell her you love her?

In Texas, go to www.giveblood.org to find the nearest blood donation location. They’re open today.
