Racism hits the road...and finds its first speed bump

Minuteman tour off to rough start: Efforts to recruit black members are met with protests in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES - Leaders of the Minuteman Project began a cross-country tour Wednesday to seek support for tighter border security, launching a caravan to the nation’s capital from a heavily black neighborhood where many residents shouted at the civilian patrol group to go home. Minuteman leaders started the trip from a black neighborhood as part of a push to attract more blacks as members.

It’s nice to know that some folks are willing to stand up and recognize bigotry and ignorance for what it is. Trying to pit one minority against another would seem a recipe for some high-grade pandering. Trying to accomplish within the African-American community, no stranger to discrimination itself, would seem the definition of lunacy. Welcome to the world of the Minuteklan Minuteman Project, where discrimination is officially disavowed…unless you’re talking about the Brown People, of course….

“If we are going to be giving preference to anybody, preference should go to the American-African community that has suffered more than anybody,” Minuteman founder Jim Gilchrist said.

But the event provoked screaming matches about whether illegal immigrants were taking jobs from blacks or should be embraced as fellow minorities seeking a better life.

Gilchrist had to yell over a dozen black protesters, most of them black, who chanted “Minutemen go home!” and “KKK go home!”

Gilchrist repeatedly stopped his speech to address the protesters, telling them: “Ours is not a racial cause. It’s a rule-of-law cause.”

No…actually, it’s a racial cause that you’ve managed to dress up as a rule-of-law cause. No matter how much lipstick Gilchrist puts on this pig, it’s still a pig. In a sick sort of way, I have to admire Gilchrist’s chutzpah. To think that he could wade into a community that has known far too much discrimination based on skin color and to preach discrimination based on skin color takes some serious cojones. Or a complete lack of common sense.

The caravan plans to stop in President Bush’s Texas vacation haven of Crawford, as well as Phoenix, Albuquerque, N.M.; Abilene; Little Rock, Ark.; Memphis, Tenn.; Nashville, Tenn.; Birmingham, Ala.; Atlanta; Greensboro, N.C.; and Richmond, Va.

Road trip!! Welcome to another episode of “Hate Takes A Holiday”. This latest reality series follows a collection of bigots as they take their show cross-county, a rolling caravan of hate in an RV. Tune in next week when Gilchrist takes a wrong turn in Central Texas and is eaten by coyotes….

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I’lll believe that the Minuteklan Minutemen are actually about something other than racism when the set up shop along the US-Canada border. Yeah…like that’s going to happen….
