Our national anthem: In Spanish since 1919

Sen. Alexander Introduces Senate Resolution on National Anthem

President Bush took a predictably bold stand last Friday when he declared that the national anthem should be sung in English.

I’m disturbed, but certainly not surprised, that Our Glorious Leader seems to have cast his lot with the Minuteklan Minutemen. What I find truly ironic is that Our Glorious Leader speaks passable Spanish and (until he stole the 2000 Presidential election) was the Governor of The Great State of Texas, which has a significant Hispanic population. So, this simply proves what a craven panderer then man is, eh? While Governor, he needed the Hispanic vote. Now that he’s Presidentiary, he’s recognized that Hispanics across the country wouldn’t vote for him if he stripped naked and sang the Mexican National Anthem in downtown Monterrey.

Of course, those who don’t know history are likely to end up voting Republican. And those who are willingly ignorant of everything save that which serves to maintain their own position of power will end up being exposed as a complete and total DUMB@$$ willing to pander to the hatred and ignorance of those who make up his base. Being a Republican means never having to say you’re sorry- or do any research, for that matter.

“I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English, and I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English,” said Bush, in English.

Senator Lamar Alexander followed suit by introducing a resolution yesterday that would require the national anthem only be sung in English.

Citing the Washington Post, his press release stated “at least 389 different versions of our anthem have been produced over the years … never before has it been rendered in another language.”

Except for that time in 1919 when it was translated into Spanish.

Man, and here all this time I was silly enough to think that truth was absolute. Apparently, one of the beautiful things about being a Republican is that truth is as relative as you need it to be. Need a fact to buttress an argument? No problem; you can fabricate one out of whole cloth- because if you argue correctly, you’re never wrong.

Oh, yeah, and being a Republican also means you can ignore those unpleasant realities that only serve to muddle the facts you create…like remembering that this country was founded by immigrants, and that we are ALL descended from immigrants (unless, of course, you’re a Native American…and then you’ve got your own reasons to distrust Republicans).

BLACK IS WHITE…DAY IS NIGHT…IGNORANCE IS KNOWLEDGE…MIGHT MAKES RIGHT…WE ARE AT WAR WITH EURASIA; WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT WAR WITH EURASIA…BROWN PEOPLE ARE SECURITY RISKS….

WE DESERVE BETTER.
