Official Apologizes For Saying Bush Should Be Shot Between Eyes
NEW YORK — State Comptroller Alan Hevesi publicly apologized Thursday for a “beyond dumb” remark about a fellow Democrat putting “a bullet between the president’s eyes.” Hevesi called a mea culpa press conference hours after putting his foot in his mouth at the Queens College commencement.
It’s true; there are few things less amusing than joking (however drunk you may happen to be) about killing the President. Though I would hardly be shedding any tears should the Earth open and swallow Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader whole, in this highly partisan day and age, joking about shooting the President does even approach being funny. That a highly-placed elected state official (and a Democrat) did so- during a college commencement speech is inexcusable. Not only that, joking about such things only provides more ammunition to Conservatives, who are looking for anything they can bash Liberals with (See! I told you so!! Now they want to kill the President!!!)

“I apologize to the president of the United States” and to the fellow state politician, Sen. Charles Schumer, Hevesi said. “I am not a person of violence.”
“I am apologizing as abjectly as I can. There is no excuse for it. It was beyond dumb.”
At the news conference, a contrite Hevesi repeated what he recalled saying in the speech. The comptroller said he was merely trying to convey that Schumer has strength and courage to stand up to the president on major policy issues.
According to a videotape of the speech, Hevesi said:
“The man who, how do I phrase this diplomatically, who will put a bullet between the president’s eyes if he could get away with it. The toughest senator, the best representative. A great, great member of the Congress of the United States.”
There is no right way to say the wrong thing, and while I can understand that Hevesi was attempting to heap strong praise on Sen. Schumer (Next time, try kneepads….), this is about the single stupidest thing I’ve heard from a Democrat in quite some time.
