Conclusive proof that, in our democracy, any despot, panderer, and/or moron can run for office

Vernon Robinson for Congress (thanks, Bob!)

The GOP (“God’s Own Party” in the mind of some Republican stalwarts) is renowned for being home to all manner of bigoted, xenophobic, intolerant, self-righteous maroons who couldn’t spell “cat” if you spotted them the “C” and the “A”. If I have to name names, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. Nonetheless, there isn’t a bigot or xenophobe out there who can hold a candle to Vernon Robinson, a Republican Congressional candidate in North Carolina. Don’t believe me? Just grab a listen here, and you’ll see what I mean. At first I thought that perhaps it was just some strange Dave Chappelle parody, but Robinson is dead serious- he’s the sort of scary Republican hypocrital zealot who’s never met a Social Conservative whose zealotry he couldn’t pander to.

Twilight Zone? Robinson shouldn’t be allowed to represent the Asheville Ladies Glee Club, much less claim a seat in Congress where he has a voice in policy issues. Someone really ought to give this maroon a refresher course on tolerance. After all, you’d think that as an African-American he might be a bit more attuned and sensitive to those who could reasonably be described as “minorities”. Or does being an Evangelical, Social Conservative zealot confer upon him the right to work towards imposing his own narrow, fear-, hate- and ignorance-based agenda on those of us not “fortunate” enough to share his “enlightened” dream of a theocracy?
