It couldn't have happened to a nicer demagogue (Epilogue)

DeLay: GOP’s ‘panic, depression’ risk losing elections

WASHINGTON — Former House majority leader Tom DeLay said he’s “disappointed” in three ex-associates who pleaded guilty in a federal probe of political corruption, but he said their admissions “doesn’t mean I knew” of their efforts to bribe Congress. The Texas Republican, who is resigning his House seat Friday, told USA TODAY that he was surprised by revelations that Tony Rudy, a former top aide, and Jack Abramoff, a former lobbyist and longtime political supporter, tried to buy influence with lawmakers.

Tom DeLay is leaving office on Friday (I know…it’s about damn time, eh? Good riddance….), and party of me wants to stage a Westboro Baptist Church. I could round up a few people willing to scream obscenities and hold up signs saying things like:

  • GOD HATES REPUBLICANS

  • THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH REPUBLICANS

  • RONNIE E LUVS TOMMY D!!

‘Course, some folks might fail to see the humor in such a display, so I’ll settle for snickering under my breath at DeLay’s demise. Normally, I’m not one to take pleasure in the suffering or inconvenience of others, but I’m more than willing to make an exception for DeLay, who has done nothing but pursue his own narrow, mean-spirited, self-righteous agenda in Congress since 1984. At the very least, a hearty “good riddance” is in order.

Tom DeLay was hardly the first, nor will be be the last, corrupt, self-interested hypocrite to walk the halls of Congress or to serve in the Texas Congressional delegation. He was simply the best and least troubled by a functional conscience that has seemingly been on holiday since coming to Washington in 1984. The word is that DeLay will be moving to Virginia, where he can hang out with Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, and other like-minded religious bigots. Frankly, they can have him.

My only wish is that I could be there when the taillights of DeLay’s moving van pulls out of Sugar Land. Good riddance to a miserable, arrogant, self-satisfied excuse for a human being…..
