Taking care of the truly important things

Senate Rejects Flag Desecration Amendment

The Senate today fell one vote short of passing a proposed constitutional amendment that would have allowed Congress to prohibit the desecration of the American flag. The proposed amendment went down when the Senate voted 66-34 to approve it. At least 67 votes — two-thirds of the 100-member body — were needed to pass the amendment, which was passed by the House last year. The vote came after two days of debate in which Republican sponsors argued that the flag deserves protection as a symbol of U.S. freedom and values, while Democratic opponents contended that amending the Constitution was an unnecessary remedy aimed mainly at assuaging conservative voters before the November midterm elections.

“[A]ssuaging conservative voters before the November midterm elections….”? Republicans would do that? Man, I’m shocked…SHOCKED!!!…that partisan pandering is occurring prior to a mid-term election cycle.

Instead of taking care to deal with important things, like the deficit, or the war in Iraq, the Medicare prescription drug plan clusterf—k, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, they’re too busy pandering to their Conservative base to actually do anything to address the truly legitimate issues facing this country. No, they’re far too concerned with their own job security (mid-term elections are less than five months away, after all) to actually do their damn jobs.

Yes, with all of the legitimate issues almost literally screaming for attention, Republicans are focused on their annual panem et circenses charade of trying to pass a Constitutional amendment banning flag burning. Yep, it’s almost July 4th; must be time to make sure we get the uber-patriotics nutjobs foaming at the mouth.

GOP! GOP! GOP! Uh…doesn’t that stand for “God’s Own Party”?? And isn’t God a Republican??

Still glad you voted Republican?? If you are, you might give some thought to raising your expectations, because you settling for some piss-poor representation….
