Right-Wing Mayor Calls for McDonald’s Boycott Over Spanish-Language Ads
Mayor Steve Lonegan (R) of Bogota, New Jersey is “calling for a McDonald’s boycott if the fast-food chain does not take down a Spanish-language billboard advertising iced coffee.”
Do you remember all the effort your eighth-grade Civics spent trying to teach you that America is a vast melting pot, a collection of people from every country and culture from around the world, most of whom came here looking for opportunity and freedom? Do you remember her teaching you that diversity was something to be celebrated, because it’s what makes America what it is? Well, you can just forget all of that $&!#, ‘cuz in Our Glorious Leader’s post-9.11 world-o’-paranoia-and-fear, different is bad. Different is to be feared. Different is to be hated…particularly if “different” also means “billboards in Spanish”.
You’d think that in a lovely, bucolic little burg like Bogota, NJ, Mayor Steve Lonegan would have his hands full keeping the CIty Council happy. Having apparently solved all of the pressing problems facing Bogota, however, Lonegan has now turned his attention and considerable energy to the scourge that are…wait for it… Spanish-language billboards.
Lonegan said the advertisement is “offensive” and “divisive” because it sends a message that Hispanic immigrants do not need to learn English.
“The true things that bind us together as neighbors and community is our belief in the American flag and our common language,” Lonegan said. “And when McDonald’s sends a different message, that we’re going to be different now, that causes resentment.”
Actually, it appears that the true things that binds us good, God-fearing White folks is the hatred of Brown People.
Hmm…someone really ought to tell Mayor Lonegan that the US military is heavily-into Spanish-language recruiting efforts. When do you think we can expect Mayor Lonegan to call for a boycott of the US armed services??
