2 GOP hopefuls remark on Napolitano’s personal life
Republican gubernatorial candidates criticize Democratic Gov. Janet Napolitano’s record on subjects ranging from immigration and taxes to education and forest health. Two of the four also have spoken critically about fundamental aspects of her personal life. Gary Tupper and Mike Harris, both of whom have children, separately cited Napolitano’s marital status - she’s single - and the fact that she hasn’t had children when answering questions during a Thursday evening forum sponsored by several Republican groups.
We like to kid ourselves that we’ve learned and progressed and are no longer tied down by the Neanderthal beliefs of our ancestors. No, now we love and respect everyone, and we recognize the inhereent worth and value of every human being. OK, now can we talk a moment for a big group hug??
Yeah, right…. How much have we really progressed when not one, but TWO Republican candidates for Governor in Arizona can come up with this bit of misogynistic twaddle about Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano:
Tupper said Napolitano didn’t have the necessary perspective to fulfill her 2002 campaign promise to fix problems with the state’s child-welfare system.
“She’s never been married. She never had kids,” Tupper said. “She doesn’t get it. She’s never going to get it.”
Later, when answering a question about a proposed ballot measure on marriage, Harris voiced his support for the initiative and then raised Napolitano’s background.
“She’s never been married. She’s never had children. I don’t think she ever will,” he said of Napolitano, who has so far declined to take a position on the marriage amendment.
Jeez, guys, why not just accuse her of being a lesbian while you’re at it? And since when is being married or having children a prerequisite for being able to weigh in on family-related issues? Like Republicans have done such a bang-up job looking out for families….
