Behold! The Titanic!! Now with new and improved life boats!!!

Bush Celebrates Fourth Largest Deficit In History

Hooray! US budget deficit only $300 billion

Bush Touts Reduced Deficit

Today, the Office of Management Budget projected a $296 billion federal deficit for fiscal year 2006. Bush held a press conference arguing that this is a vindication of his economic policies.

Actually, it would be the fourth largest deficit of all time. Here’s the top five:

  1. 2004 (George W. Bush) $413 billion
  2. 2003 (George W. Bush) $378 billion
  3. 2005 (George W. Bush) $318 billion
  4. 2006 (George W. Bush) $296 billion (projected)
  5. 1992 (George H. W. Bush) $290 billion

When President Bush came into office, he inherited a surplus of $284 Billion. At that time, the Bush administration predicted a $516 billion surplus for 2006.

I heard this story on NPR last night on my way home from work, and my first thought was WTF??? Time for yet another trip down the White House rabbit hole, where reality is anything you can spin it to be, and if you keep repeating it with enough sincerity, it will eventually become the truth. Unbelievable….

Perhaps my pointy li’t haid just doesn’t possess the intellectual candlepower necessary to fully grasp the significance of the moment, but I do have one tiny little question. How can announcing the fourth-largest deficit IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY POSSIBLY BE CONSTRUED AS SOMETHING TO CELEBRATE?? Has Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader’s willingness to engage in shameless propaganda and spin doctoring once again reached a new low? Like I even need to answer that question….

It would seem that our government has sunk to the level of a dog and pony show, where truth is far less important than what you can convince the sheeple to believe. No matter how much or how well you spin it, a $300 billion deficit is nothing to celebrate - especially when you consider that this Adminstration inherited a surplus from Bill Clinton. That Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader sees no problem with spinning this ugly truth as a great day for American taxpayers is just about the lowest I can remember a politician sinking.

Hey, Einstein, didn’t you inherit a rather sizable surplus from Bill Clinton? How’s that working out for you??

Jeebus, I feel like I woke up and found myself face-down in Cloud Cuckoo Land with a world-class hangover….
