[Duncan] Bremer, a former El Paso County commissioner, said the war against fanatical fundamentalist Islam should be fought on two fronts: militarily and religiously. “There’s an aspect of it that people are not willing to talk about, and I am - its religious basis….Our best hope is that we actually convert them away from their religious fanatical basis,”….He said that would best be accomplished by missionaries of various faiths. “I’d prefer that they get converted to evangelical Christianity, but my point is that there is a religious battleground and our government is disabled from fighting on that battleground,” Bremer said.
In order to run for any sort of elected office in Colorado Springs, CO, one must bow before and pledge fealty to the two 800-lb. gorillas that dominate any sort of public discourse in the area: Evangelical Christianity and the military (Colorado Spring is home to the US Air Force Academy). Insufficient pandering in either of these areas is likely to get one branded as a Godless, spineless, America-hating Librul…and maybe even a Gay-loving closet Communist. Of course, this being Colorado Springs, there is NEVER any lack of good, God-fearing, flag-waving Republicans willing to wear their faith and their patriotism on their sleeves. This makes for all sorts of comic relief, and Duncan Bremer (for giggles, you can read him furiously backpedalling here) is merely the latest example of why the Founding Fathers wanted to keep knuckle-dragging Evangelical Christianity separate from the affairs of state.
Then again, there ain’t NUTHIN’ that a big ol’ heapin’ helping of JESUS can’t cure, eh? And if we have to kill you and convert your children to prove it…well, what WOULD Jesus do??
