Financial aid records of college students examined in terrorist search

WASHINGTON — A little-known federal program created days after Sept. 11, 2001, examined financial aid records of college students in an effort to identify terrorists, but it’s unclear whether it netted any, according to U.S. Education Department documents. The program, called Project Strike Back, was a joint project of the department and the FBI and was created 10 days after the terrorist attacks, according to the documents from the department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG)….About 14 million students apply for federal financial aid to attend college each year, the Education Department says. FBI spokeswoman Catherine Milhoan said the FBI provided OIG with “a small, select list of a couple of hundred names associated with ongoing investigations.”

From the “Unwarranted Invasion of Privacy” file comes this report. Apparently college were considered to be the next threat, but no one knows whether any terrorists were identified, or whether FBI agents just spent there time looking for pictures of naked co-eds on CollegeHumor.com

I’d get all worked up about this charade, but, really, haven’t we seen this sort of thing before? Isn’t our government’s invading the privacy of Americans just another example of how out of control Our Glorious and Benevolent and his henchmen have become? How sad is it that this sort of criminal fishing expedition barely even raises eyebrows anymore. Sadly, we’ve come to expect this sort of crap from this government.

Of course, if nothing else, a bunch of FBI agents did get to go to some killer keggers. When asked if any of the agents got lucky, an FBI spokesperson had no comment. Uh…don’t ask, don’t tell??
