Fundamentalism: The fear that someone, somewhere is having something resembling fun

Activists Try to Curtail Hotels’ In-Room Porn

NEW YORK — Pornographic movies now seem nearly as pervasive in America’s hotel rooms as tiny shampoo bottles, and the lodging industry shows little concern as conservative activists rev up a protest campaign aimed at triggering a federal crackdown. A coalition of 13 conservative groups — including the Family Research Council and Concerned Women for America — took out full-page ads in some editions of USA Today earlier this month urging the Justice Department and FBI to investigate whether some of the pay-per-view movies widely available in hotels violate federal and state obscenity laws.

I’m not going to launch into a lengthy impassioned defense of porn, but at some point doesn’t it ultimately come down to a matter of personal choice? Isn’t what a person does in the privacy of their hotel the concern of that person and that person alone? Or do the self-righteous, hyper-religious busybodies really have the right to set the rules for all of us according to their narrow, judgemental standards?

Personally, I don’t much care what a person watches in their hotel room. Sadly, far too many people do, though this realistically seems like an issue of free choice. If you choose to watch in-room porn, that should be the free choice of the individual involved. The state, and certainly Fundamentalist Chrstians have no stake in this argument, other than ensuring that we all conform to THEIR rules.

This issue is what some refer to as a “victimless crime”, but if there’s no victim, then where’s the crime? The only issue here is that a form of in-room enterteinment offends the sensibilities of a few narrow, self-righteous trolls. This should be a fairly simple equation- if you’re opposed to, or offended by pornography, then don’t order it on your in-room television. There; wasn’t that easy? Why, then, do so many feel the need to impose their narrow self-righteousness on others? Well, when you have no respect for others, or for their beliefs and individuality, it’s probably a very easy thing to do.

Ah, America…land of the free- as long as you’re a White, Fundamentalist Christian. The rest of y’all can go stright to Hell….
