Christmas arrives early in capital
Christmas officially arrived in London on Tuesday as one retailer ignored the hot weather and got into the festive spirit. Launching its 15,000 sq ft ‘Christmas World’, Harrods reminded customers they have only 139 shopping days left before December 25.
Every year, it seems to get worse, Jeebus, people…its @!#$%^& AUGUST!! It a gazillion degrees outside, people are dying of heat stroke, and Harrod’s is reminding us that we have ONLY 139 shopping days until Christmas? Oh, well, I’ll get right after it…. Can we all just get a grip in reality here? Yes, I realize that Christmas represents as much as 25% of an entire year’s receipts for certain segments of the retail industry, but the Holiday season has because so increasingly commerciailzed that it may well in our lifetimes become a full-time, year-round phenomenon. I don’t mean to sound alarmist, but I used to complain when businesses put up their Christmas finery before Thanksgiving. Now we’re talking about early August? If there was any lingering doubt regarding the purely secular and commercial nature of the Christmas holiday, this sorry scenario should blow that doubt right out of the water.
Talk about too much of a good thing….
