Survey: Nationwide gas prices decline nearly 24 cents
U.S. retail gas prices dropped nearly 24 cents a gallon in the past two weeks, the third consecutive decline since a mid-August peak, according to a survey today. The national average for self-serve regular was about $2.42 on Sept. 22, down from about $2.65 two weeks earlier, according to the Lundberg Survey of 7,000 gas stations across the country.
Hmm…it’s almost as if there’s an election looming.
Uh, wait…there is? Damn, what a coincidence, eh? Or not, depending on just how cynical you happen to be. And I,of course, am just cynical enough to wonder if that smell isn’t just the barest hint of market manipulation just in time to ensure that Republicans (the best friend Big Oil ever had) maintain control of Congress.
Could it be happening? Who knows? While I’m not one to spout conspiracy theories, the “coincidence” is just a bit too much for me to pass off the drop in gasoline prices as just a normal “market correction”.
And here’s something else to consider: we’re just in time for Karl Rove’s “October Surprise”. I can hardly wait….
The word "conspiracy" has taken an unfair beating of late. When more than one entity or person collude to do something, it is quite simply, as conspiracy. I hate the half-dropped eyes and silent head-wagging that are apparently mandatory when this word is spoken. The only thing missing is the finger being wound in a circle near the temple to indicate true insanity should one mention a "conspiracy". Jesus, the world is full of them, and so is history. Sorry if I distrust my fellow mankind to this degree, but I am afraid that history is on my side.

Are oil prices being manipulated in time for the fall elections? How can that be a leap of faith for you, Northstar? Look at the global mayhem and mountain of lies THAT ARE PUBLICLY KNOWN to have been directly attributed to this administration. The Bush clan is heavily involved in the oil business. Prices are falling at rates that are unprecedented in modern times. There has been no major discovery of oil, nor a discovery of a cheaper way to transport or refine said commodity. WTF?
I have my suspicions (and I'm not the only one), but what I am saying is that there is at this time a dearth of hard evidence. You DO have to admit that the time certainly is fortuitous if you're a Republican candidate, though.... ;p)
Sometimes the simple and obvious answer might actually be the correct one. Clearly supply and demand have little to do with price variations, since neither have substantially changed in the past few weeks. Fear of reduced supply due to a potential war with Iran hasn't suddenly gone away. I think the "conspiracy", such as it was, evolved sufficiently that big oil dominated the Cheney energy policy task force, thanks to their donations to the Bush campaign, and thus were able to earn record profits for a while. Let us not forget that Bush and Cheney were both big oil men and have proven over and over again that their first obligation was to take good care of their own.
