Some of y’all might remember that I ran a write-in campaign for governor in 2002. It was quite likely the first gubernatorial campaign in the history of Texas with a total campaign budget of $0.00. I hadn’t planned on running again this year; I didn’t want to “Nader” Chris Bell. As the election draws closer, though, my base is beginning to rumble with the inevitable questions: Will Jack run again? Will he save us from the ineptitude and enforced mediocrity of Governor Goodhair? I don’t know the answer to those questions just now. Running a campaign on a $0.00 budget is not an easy thing to pull off. You need a network of volunteers who won’t snicker when they’re stumping for you. You need graphics, slogans, programs, and platforms. I have none of these…unless you call playing plenty of golf in Austin a platform. As far as a slogan goes, I’ve only got one lined up so far (and I’m open to suggestions):
DOING WHAT LITTLE I CAN WITH WHAT LITTLE I’VE GOT
It’s not much, but when you can’t afford focus groups, consultants, or wholesale, large scale ad buys…well, you have to take what you can get.
So, the question is: should I throw my hat into the ring again this year? And if so, will anyone design campaign posters and come up with some witty, smart-ass slogans?
The floor’s open, y’all….
