Poor, naive me. ‘Course, I was a History and Anthropology major, so I’m probably not smart enough to hold my own with real, honest-to-God scientists, but I can certainly recognize when hyper-religious, abject-reality-be-damned trolls are determined to hijack demonstrated scientific fact and replace it with ideology, hearsay, and I-want-to-believe.
Dr. D. James Kennedy, in the words of the Anti-Defamation League: is a leader among the distinct group of ‘Christian Supremacists’ who seek to “reclaim America for Christ” and turn the U.S. into a Christian nation guided by their strange notions of biblical law.” Now he’s turned his attention to the theory of Evolution, which as any apocalyptic Christian will tell you, is an inconvenient bit of “truth” that just doesn’t fit with their preconceived theology. And we all know what happens when truth runs into theology, don’t we??
It must be nice to be so thoroughly convinced of the righteous of one’s own beliefs. How comforting to know with absolute certainty that empirical science can’t hold a candle to faith and Scripture. How refreshing to go through life unencumbered by the burden of proving a theory through the real and the demonstrable.
When your faith trumps anything, even empirical science, it can be used for anything, including the most egregious and indefensible propaganda. D. James Kennedy may call himself a “Christian”, and he may even have his own ministry, but in reality he’s little more than a truth-be-damned, I’ll-make-it-up-as-I-go demagogue concerned more with power, wealth, and control than preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today blasted a television documentary produced by Christian broadcaster Dr. D. James Kennedy’s Coral Ridge Ministries that attempts to link Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution to Adolf Hitler and the atrocities of the Holocaust. ADL also denounced Coral Ridge Ministries for misleading Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute for the NIH, and wrongfully using him as part of its twisted documentary, “Darwin’s Deadly Legacy.”
After being contacted by the ADL about his name being used to promote Kennedy’s project, Dr. Collins said he is “absolutely appalled by what Coral Ridge Ministries is doing. I had NO knowledge that Coral Ridge Ministries was planning a TV special on Darwin and Hitler, and I find the thesis of Dr. Kennedy’s program utterly misguided and inflammatory,” he told ADL.
ADL National Director Abraham H. Foxman said in a statement:”This is an outrageous and shoddy attempt by D. James Kennedy to trivialize the horrors of the Holocaust. Hitler did not need Darwin to devise his heinous plan to exterminate the Jewish people. Trivializing the Holocaust comes from either ignorance at best or, at worst, a mendacious attempt to score political points in the culture war on the backs of six million Jewish victims and others who died at the hands of the Nazis.
And it appears that Kennedy and his evil minions have been furiously trying to cover their track. If you look at Coral Ridge Ministries online promotional page for Darwin’s Deadly Legacy (thanks to P.Z. Myers!), you can see that from one week to the next, things look slightly different. Not only has Dr. Frances Collins been removed from the blurb, but Ann Coulter has been also. Hmmm…and I would have thought that this sort of pseudo-intellectual self-serving nihilism would have been right up her alley.
Truth? Who needs it when you have faith and an ego the size of Texas?
