A light at the end of the tunnel?

Bush: War critics are buying into enemy propaganda

WASHINGTON — President Bush asserted today that critics who claim the Iraq war has made America less safe embrace “the enemy’s propaganda.” He acknowledged setbacks in Afghanistan against a Taliban resurgence but predicted eventual victory….”You do not create terrorism by fighting terrorism,” he told a receptive military audience. “If that ever becomes the mind-set of the policymakers in Washington, it means we’ll go back to the old days of waiting to be attacked — and then respond.”

Time was- and not so very long ago- that leaders worked to convince skeptics of the correctness of their vision through reason, evidence, and intelligent argument. Leaders recognized that dissent was part and parcel of what makes this country what it is. Now, though, we’re saddled with an intellectual midget who views dissent as bordering on treason and whose idea of persuasion is to accuse his critics of being unduly influence by terrorists. Welcome to BushWorld, where it’s always 9.11, Republican Standard Time. It’s a place where normal, reasoned debate is viewed as a threat to democracy and where fear-mongering is the order of the day. After all, if you can keep the American sheeple in a constant, helpless state of quivering fear, they’re not going to want to changed horsemen in the middle of an Apocalypse, are they??

I’ve grown tired of the lies, the fear-mongering, the question the patriotism of those of us who disagree with the course our country is being led on. Under Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader, and using 9.11 as the ever-present justification, we’ve lost almost 3,000 of our sons and daughters in a war with no point, logical explanation, or way out of. We’re saddled with a government that defines “torture” only as pain equivalent to organ failure- anything less is a legitimate and legal means of extracting information from suspected terrorists. We’ve become a nation afraid of our own shadow- and we’ve allowed our government to use and manipulate that fear to justify their continue deathgrip on power.

I’m beginning to feel like a broken record, but as I’m fighting off disillusionment and ennui, I can see a light at the end of the tunnel. Five weeks from now, we have an opportunity to restore decency, honesty, and most of all, SANITY to government again. Certainly, we’re stuck with Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader for two more years, but by voting Democrats back into control of Congress, we have a better chance of keeping him from running roughshod over our civil rights in pursuit of his thuggish theocratic agenda. With any luck, we may actually see a movement to impeach Our Glorious and Benevolent Leader. I’m not holding my breath, mind you, but a man can dream, can’t he??

Five weeks until we take our country back. Five weeks until we can restore honesty and sanity to government. THEN perhaps we can impeach the lying bastard in the White House for the murder of our sons and daughters.
